SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 29, 2010) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University men's soccer team won their final two pre-season games Sunday and last Friday, beating Schreiner 4-1 and the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor 2-0. The men conclude their pre-season with a record of 2-1. On Friday, they will take on Texas Lutheran University for their first regular-season game.
The Saints began Friday's game strong, with senior midfielder Esteban Rocha controlling the middle of the field. With the midfield under control, OLLU began their assault on the UMHB defense. In the first half alone, OLLU outshot their opponent 15-4. Despite the advantage, the half ended tied with neither team netting a goal.
Five minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Jack Martinez took advantage of a loose ball inside the penalty area and tucked away his first goal of the season to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
The Saints continued their strong midfield play well into the second half with sophomore defender Danny Medina pushing forward to join the attack. Late in the game, senior midfielder Cesar Dominguez ended any chance of a comeback by beating the UMHB goalkeeper to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper Nick Garza recorded his first clean sheet of the season in shutting out UMHB.
Scoring in Sunday's game against Schreiner were Tomas Flores, Danny Medina, Yared Temesgen and Cesar Dominguez.
