The Saints women's volleyball team sponsored a tri-match on Wednesday evening between Concordia University and Laredo Community College. The Saints played the first match against Laredo Community College, but the Palominos proved too powerful as they won 3-1. The first game saw the Saints leading throughout taking a 25-21 win. The Palominos came back to dominate the Saints in the next two games winning 25-15 and 25-17. The last game of the series was more evenly matched, but the team from Laredo prevailed and won 28-26.
Freshman standout Marquisha Matthews wowed the fans with her 19 kills, the most recorded for any Saints volleyball player. She also marked two blocks and an assist. In addition, Isela Flores stood out with eight kills, while returning all-conference player Liza Rodriguez finished with six kills and one block.
Transfer junior Samantha Salazar recorded 11 digs, with returning senior Sarah Lindsay logging in six. Patricia Underwood, also a transfer junior, led the Saints in blocks with three.
The Concordia University Tornados took on Laredo in the second match of the evening. Just like the Saints, the team from Austin were overpowered by Laredo as they lost in three straight sets. The score was 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17.
OLLU returned to the court to face Concordia at 8 p.m. Looking tired, the Saints dropped the first game to the Tornados by a score of 25-19. However, the Saints refocused and took the next three sets, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-15.
Lindsay led the team in digs with
nine, while Jessica Chavez had six, and both Desirea Aguilar and Kelsey Johnson finished with five each. Chavez had 20 assists and Aguilar had 15. Rodriguez finished with 10 kills, Matthews had eight and Johnson had six. Tasha Yancey led the team in blocks with four, while Rodriguez and Jennifer Herrera each had two.

With the first match deemed a scrimmage and not counting toward their record, the Saints are now 1-0 in regular season play. Their next three matches will be on the road. The Saints play the University of St. Thomas in Houston on Sept. 7 and they begin conference play on Sept. 9 against Huston-Tillotson University in Austin and on Sept. 14 against the University of Texas at Brownsville.
