SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 15, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team lost to Wayland Baptist University (WBU) 87-79. The Saints drop to 2-1 on the season and the Flying Queens improve to 2-1. The Saints are the No. 6 team in the NAIA, while Wayland is No. 5. In the NAIA tournament last season, the Saints ended the Flying Queens season in the Round of Eight to advance to the Fab Four

History

This is the eighth matchup between the two teams and the series is tied 4-4.

Basics

The Saints started the first half hot and led by seven at the end of the first quarter. WBU battled back to lead by as many as eight points during the second quarter and headed to the locker room up 46-42. Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) led the Saints in scoring at halftime with 14 points. Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) snatched five rebounds and tallied four assists.

In the third quarter, Wayland Baptist jumped out to their biggest lead of the game and led by 12 points. The Flying Queens were shooting 44.2 percent from the field going into the fourth quarter and were led by Morgan Bennett with 18 points.

The Saints trailed by only three points multiple times in the fourth quarter, but WBU fended off the comeback and finished strong to win by eight. The Saints shot an impressive 92 percent from the free-throw line, and Wilson finished with a team-leading 20 points.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Wilson led the Saints in scoring with 20 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the field and making all four free throws. White scored 17 points, followed by Miller with 11. White led the Saints with seven rebounds, followed by Emiko Hemphill (JR/San Antonio, Texas) with six. White also led the team with five assists.

WBU was led by Bennett with 23 points. Payton Brown led the team with seven rebounds. Jenna Cooper contributed a team-high five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 25-of-65 shooting for 38.5 percent, 6-of-24 from three-point range for 25 percent and 23-of-25 from the free-throw line for 92 percent. WBU shot 28-of-67 for 41.8 percent, 9-of-27 three pointers for 33.3 percent and 22-of-27 from the free-throw line for 81.5 percent.

The Saints grabbed 36 rebounds while the Flying Queens collected 48 rebounds. OLLU forced 18 turnovers and committed 17.

The Saints travel to Westmont, Calif. for the Westmont Classic. Their first game will be against the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Westmont College on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m.
