VICTORIA, TEXAS (March 31, 2012) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) on Saturday. The Saints lost the first game 3-7 and won the second 7-3 in 11 innings.
The Saints' overall record is now 13-12 and remains 8-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while UHV – the No. 9 team in the NAIA – is 20-6.
The Jaguars put three runs on the board in the first inning, and the Saints countered in the third after Coral Salazar reached first on a shot to centerfield. Maegan Ramirez hit a double, and Brittany Stone connected on a three-run homer.
With the game tied at three, the Jaguars added two runs to close out the third inning with the 5-3 lead. UHV added a run in the fifth inning and sixth inning to close out the game with the 7-3 win over the Saints.
The Jaguars put the first run on the scoreboard in the second game after a sacrifice fly from Ashley Winegeart gave Bre'Neka O'Bryant the go-ahead to score. The game stayed at 1-0 until the seventh inning when Kailyn Miller's double to center drove in Ruby Ximenez taking the score to 1-1.
The Jaguars threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh after they loaded the bases, but Saints' pitcher Maegan Ramirez struck out pinch-hitter Tara Williams to send the game into extra innings.
The score stayed tied through the 11th inning when Ashley Elizalde started off a six-run rally after she walked. A short infield hopper from Ximenez sent her to base, and a bunt from Ashley Perez filled the bases. Ramirez's shot to right field scored Elizalde and Ximenez. A Jaguars' error drove in Perez, and a hit from Stone scored Ramirez. After a pitching change from former OLLU standout Dawn Villegas to Emily Bergstrom, a rightfield hit from Kimberlee Briseño gave Julie Ramos the chance to score. Salazar, in to pinch hit for Meagan Potts, hit a sacrifice fly to score Stone, and the inning ended with the Saints leading 7-1.
The Jaguars added two runs to close out the game with the Saints winning 7-3.
In the two-game series, Stone went 2-for-8 to include four RBIs and one homerun. Briseño went 3-for-8 and added one RBI. Kaitlyn Bourg hit a double to go 2-for-4, while Salazar went 2-for-5 and Ramirez, 2-for-7 including two RBIs.
