SAN ANTONIO (April 7. 2012) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU)  softball team beat the University of the Southwest two games to one this weekend. The Saints lost the first matchup 3-2, then came back to win 5-3 in Friday's doubleheader. The teams returned to play their last game of the series Saturday morning, and the Saints won 8-1.

The Saints are now 10-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference and 17-13 overall, while the Mustangs are 11-7 in the conference and 17-16 overall. OLLU, along with Northwood University (9-3/11-13), is ½ a game behind first-place Texas Wesleyan University (11-4/13-17).

The Mustangs got on the scoreboard quickly after capitalizing on two Saints' errors in the first inning. Maegan Ramirez homered to left to score the first run for the Saints in the bottom of the third.

With the Mustangs ahead 2-1, they scored another run in the sixth inning after a hit from Liz Garcia drove in Leslie Dominguez to put them ahead 3-1. The Saints added another run to close out the inning when a double from Ashley Elizalde drove in Ruby Ximenez (pictured at right). No other runs were scored, and the Mustangs won 3-2.

Elizalde led the Saints in hitting as she went 2 for 3 including one RBI.

Brittany Stone started the bottom of the first inning of the second game by reaching the base on a walk. Kimberlee Briseno got on base with a walk, as well. A double from Ashley Perez gave Stone the opportunity to score. Ramirez hit a short hopper to third, and both Briseno and Perez scored to give the Saints the 3-0 lead.

The Mustangs blew the game wide open after scoring three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3.

Elizalde headed to first base on a walk to start the bottom of the seventh inning. After a pop-out by Julie Ramos, Stone came to bat, and on a 2-2 count, she connected on the ball and hit it over the fence for the walk-off homerun. The game ended with the Saints winning 5-3.

Perez led the Saints in hitting as she went 2 for 3. Ximenez was credited with the win as she faced 28 batters, giving up six hits, while walking three and striking out five.

The final game of the series on Saturday morning started with Ramirez at the mound. The first three batters she faced each grounded out.  The Mustangs came back in the second inning to score a run to lead 1-0.

Stone started the third inning by getting on base on a hit to leftfield. Bourg's hit to the outfield advanced Amanda Hinojosa – pinch-running for Stone – to second. Perez reached first base on a fielder's choice that forced Hinojosa out at third. A double from Ramirez sent Bourg home. Kailyn Marie Miller (pictured at left) slammed the ball over the centerfield fence driving in three runs to give the Saints the 4-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Julie Ramos hit her first career triple with the Saints when the ball reached the right-field fence.  Stone followed with a double down the right field line to drive in Ramos. A hit from Coral Salazar sent Stone home to put the Saints ahead 6-1.

Stone shot the ball out to center to start out the bottom of the sixth inning. Briseno got to base on a Mustangs' error, and a hit to second base by Shelby Blanar gave Stone to opportunity to score.  Miller's flyout sent Blanar home to give the Saints the 8-1 lead and the win.

Stone led the Saints in hitting as she went 3 for 4. Ramirez pitched six innings, allowing four hits, while striking out two in 23 at bats.

The Saints will play their next games at home on April 13, when they face non-conference opponent the University of Houston at Victoria. Game times are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
