TYLER, TEXAS (Feb. 4, 2013) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team crushed the Lady Steers of Texas College by a score of 110-72.
The win moves the Saints to 15-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference and 22-1 overall with a solid two-game lead over Wiley College (12-2/18-3) and LSU-Shreveport (12-2/17-3). Texas College drops to 4-13 in the conference and 5-18 overall.
In the conference's weekly poll, the Saints are ranked No. 1 for the first time this season. They are followed by LSU-Shreveport and Wiley College -- both of whom are tied at No. 2. The NAIA DI Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll will be released later today. In last week's poll, the Saints remained at No. 21 for the second consecutive week. Wiley is No. 17, and LSU-S received 49 votes.
The Saints were led by Nashae Owens, who scored 27 points and added six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Alisha Crump followed with 19 points and nine rebounds. Mercedes Dobson finished with 12 points, while Nikkia Davis added nine points, 12 assists and five steals.
OLLU shot 48 percent from the field, 54 percent from 3-point range and 77 percent from the free-throw line. The Saints forced 27 turnovers, while committing 17.
The Lady Steers shot 42 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 67 percent from the free-throw line. They had four with double-digit scoring: Keyara Criner, 17; Shirley McGowan, 14; Sekeya Roberson, 11; and Jessica Williams 10. Criner added 11 rebounds.
OLLU will continue their road trip on Thursday when they will be in Houston to play the University of St. Thomas. Earlier this season, the Saints beat the Lady Celts 110-78. Currently, they are 13-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference with six games behind first place.
