The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team roughed up the Huston-Tillotson University Rams in a 3-1 victory Friday at the OLLU soccer field. The win evened the men's record at 3-3.

The men's match started as a physical affair, and less than 10 minutes into the game, Rams' defender Marco Gutierrez received a red card for a tackle from behind during a Saints breakaway opportunity. After the ejection, sophomore forward Ramon Rodriguez coolly converted the penalty kick to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

With the Rams down to 10 men on the field, the Saints stepped up the pressure. On paper, the remainder of the first half looked uneventful, but in truth, the Saints methodically wore down the Rams with an increased tempo and physical play. The Saints finished the half with four shots at goal, while Huston-Tillotson managed three.

Merely two minutes into the second half, the Saints' first half efforts paid off. Rodriguez quickly netted his second unassisted goal of the game after beating Rams' goalkeeper Chris Venues. The goal once again seemed to fire up both teams. Five minutes later, Rodriguez found himself in an altercation with Rams defender Sergio Colin. The physical play had finally found its limits with the referee and Rodriguez was ejected from the game after receiving a red card.

Although the teams were now even with 10 men each, the damage of the first half's tempo had already taken its toll on the Rams. The Saints once again picked up the pace and attacked relentlessly. The payoff came in the 71st minute when freshman forward Octavio Herrera found himself alone near the top of the 18-yard box and lifted the ball over the Rams goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.

With 11 minutes left in the game, the Rams attack finally found its way past the Saints' sophomore goalkeeper, Marco Herrera. The goal closed the Rams' deficit to 3-1, but that was as close as it would get.

The Rams' lone goal of the day proved to be the only blemish on an otherwise extraordinary day for the Saints goalkeeper, who registered five saves for the game. Rodriguez led the Saints offensively with three shots and two goals. Octavio Herrera registered three shots and one goal. Junior defender Ricky Guerra, freshman defender Humberto Saenz, junior forward Tomas Flores, and senior midfielder DJ Kagebein all registered one shot each.
