SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 31, 2013) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team opened its home schedule against the University of Houston-Victoria and won 2-0. The win moves the Saints to 1-0, while the Jaguars are 1-2.
Head Coach Shane Hurley said, "Our men didn't play very well. We needed to work more effectively. We made a lot of mistakes. But we were fortunate to score two goals to win the game."
With just five minutes expired on the clock, sophomore Giovanni Sierra scored the Saints' first goal on an assist from Yared Temesgen. The teams then started to get a lot more aggressive as OLLU incurred eight fouls, while Jaguars had four. Plus, UHV's Nelson Castro received a yellow card for tripping Saints' Robert Alexe. Four minutes later, Castro received a red card. The Saints' Luis Flores received a yellow card in the first half, as well.
The second half showed little difference with both teams continuing to battle for control. Freshman Marco Perales entered the game with about 10 minutes remaining in the game and drove the ball down the field for a goal on an assist from Nickolas Tyrpak. The Saints would receive three more yellow cards, while the Jaguars got two more in the second half.
The game ended with the Saints receiving 17 fouls, compared to seven for the Jaguars. Keeper Zackery Brewer recorded two saves for the Saints, while UHV's Henrik Hundesrugge finished with four. Temesgen, Angel De la Garza, Sierra, Perales and Roberto Lopez each had one shot on goal for the Saints.
The Saints will return to the field on Sunday to host the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 3 p.m.
