SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 2, 2013) -- In two consecutive games, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's soccer team had to come from behind to win the game. Yesterday afternoon, the Saints faced the Drovers from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), and after trailing 1-0 in the first half, OLLU came back to win 3-2 in overtime.
OLLU is now 2-0, while USAO drops to 0-2.
The Saints had many opportunities to score in the beginning of the game, but the women could not find the inside of the net. After 18 minutes had passed, the Lady Drovers drove the ball in to record an unassisted goal by Jade Ovendale.
Victoria Vazquez scored two goals and had one assist.
In the second half, the Saints continued to dominate on offense, but five more shots on goal were saved by Lee. At the 69th minute, junior Stephanie Diaz took a pass from senior Victoria Vazquez to score the Saints' first goal. Three minutes later, USAO's Linda Addo scored to take back the lead. The teams could not get close to the box until Vazquez snuck the ball into the net to tie the game at two with less than four minutes remaining in the last period.
Overtime began with the Saints taking five consecutive shots. A USAO defender was assessed a penalty for touching the ball with her hand. Vazquez took the penalty kick and shot it straight into the net for the winning goal.
After the game, Vazquez, who scored two goals and had one assist, said, "I'm glad we came back from a deficit, but we really need to come out stronger at the beginning of the game. I'm not big on celebrating my own goals, I am just happy our team won, and I will do whatever the team needs."
Morgan Mosegard takes the ball down the field.
Senior Chelsea Flores added, "I think we learned a lot about ourselves in the past two games, the way we came back to win. We'll use this throughout the season to help us succeed."
OLLU's Teegan Luckemeyer led both teams in shots on goal with five, while Stephania Vazquez and Megan Jefferies had three each. Saints starting keeper recorded three saves, while second period keeper Gabriela Lopez recorded two. USAO's Lee finished with 15 saves.
The Saints will host St. Mary's University on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. On Sept. 6, the Saints will return to the field to host Schreiner University at 2 p.m.
