ABILENE, TEXAS (Sept. 8, 2013) -- Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's cross-country ran their first meet of the season as a team when they competed in the 2013 Bill Libby Invitational, hosted by McMurry University, at Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas.
The team finished in seventh place out of eight teams with a total time of 1:48:55.39. Head Coach Stephen Sherman had high expectations on his team after last year's meet in Abilene. "I was disappointed we didn't run as a team as well as we did here last year, but it is certainly nothing that we are worried about."
The fastest team of the day was Texas Wesleyan University with a total time of 1:35:55.67.
Freshman Ceara O'Donnell was the first Saints runner to complete the 5000m with the time 20:57.70. The time placed her in 20th place out of 73 runners.
Sophomore Erica Ramos crossed the finish line seconds after O'Donnell with the time 21:03.62 and finished in 27th place.
Sherman was happy with the results from O'Donnell and Ramos, and he said, "There is no doubt that the duo will be important for the Saints. Ceara and Erica each had a solid outing and certainly represent a better one-two combination than we have had in the past."
Senior Laura Echeverria ran her first meet of the season and finished in 51st place with the time 22:21.96. The team's second senior, Alexandria DeLuna, finished in 45th place with the time 22:07.55.
The Saints had two freshman runners, who made their first start for the program in Ione Rodriguez and Bianca Renteria. Rodriguez finished in 52nd place with the time 22:24.56, and Renteria finished in 64th place with the time 23:15.35.
Chloe Susset from Abilene Christian won with the time 18:07.22.
The Saints will get a two-week break from competing before it is time to run the next meet. Sherman hopes that his runners will get some well-deserved time to prepare for the upcoming pre-conference meet. "We are looking forward to putting in more work over the next couple of weeks in preparation for our pre-conference race in two weeks."
The next meet for the Saints will be the East Texas Cross Country Invitational in New Summerfield on Sept. 21 at 9 a.m.
