The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) cross-country team spent the evening of Sept. 18 competing in the Ricardo Romo UTSA Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Although this was OLLU's second meet of the season, it was the first time the team competed as a whole unit with all five runners present.
The meet was dominated by the home school, with UTSA placing six runners in the top eight positions. Despite this, the Saints placed respectfully, with freshman Miriam Vazquez leading the way with a time of 21:23.0. Her 6:54 pace placed her 17th out of 49 runners competing.
Freshman Jessica McGlothlin's time of 23:27.0 placed her 27th in the meet. Her pace was 7:34.
Sophomore Brandis Hurt finished with a time of 25:02.7 with a pace of 8:05. Almost 30 seconds later, sophomore Katherine Brunner crossed the finish line with a time of 25:40.4 and a pace of 8:17.
Sophomore Bernadette Grajeda finished with a time of 29:45.7 and a pace of 9:36.
The meet was the second time competing this year for Vazquez, McGlothlin and Brunner with each runner improving on her last performance. McGlothlin shaved 30 seconds off her pace from the last meet, while Brunner chopped 22 seconds off her time.
With the team competing as a whole for the first time, cross-country coach Stephen Sherman felt good about the team's results.
"It was good to put the full team out there this evening," he said. "I was very pleased with the way the women ran. Miriam Vazquez and Jessica McGlothlin had especially good races."
Although Sherman is pleased with the results, he remains determined to build on the outcome.
"Overall, there are still things that we can work on, but that is good," he said. "If we ran perfect today, I would be worried in that we want to be at our best in November, not September."
