The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints women's team started out slow, came back after halftime to force the game into overtime, but ultimately lost to the no. 2 ranked Texas Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon, 76-78. The Saints, ranked no. 4, dropped to 9-11, 5-5 in the conference, while the Lady Rams improved to 12-6, 8-2.
The game proved to be a defensive struggle from the beginning with both teams fighting for control. The Rams led for the majority of the first half, but the Saints took their first lead midway when Krystal Manning was fouled. Stacey Darnley hit a three-pointer, taking the score to 17-16. The lead went back to the Rams after Keona Ray shot a three-pointer and drew a foul.
The Saints committed some careless mistakes, including a double dribble by Vernessa Roberts that gave the Rams a 25-26 lead. Both teams had high turnovers, but neither were shooting very well from the free-throw line. The Saints made 7 of 15, while the Rams shot 8 of 17. The half ended with the Saints trailing 35-40.
With a little more than 10 minutes left in the second half, Tasha Yancey blocked a shot attempt by the Rams. Alisha Crump took the ball down the court and was fouled. She tied the score up at 51. The game would go back and fourth with six tie scores and eight lead changes through the end of regulation time with the score tied up at 66.
The overtime period began with the Rams scoring six quick points to give them the lead, 66-72. After a foul on Roberts, the Saints were able to come within one point of the Rams, 70-72. Each eam committed fouls, taking the individuals players to the line and giving each a turn at the lead.
With just a little more than 20 seconds left in the game, Manning made two free throws taking the score to 75-76. With one second left, and the Rams leading by three, Manning was fouled before she could get a chance at a basket. She went to the line and made one of two foul shots, which was not enough to whittle down the Rams lead. The game ended with the final score 76-78.
The Saints shot 36% compared to 46% for the Rams. Manning led the Saints in scoring with 18, while Crump finished with a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebouds. Ashley Davis finished with 23 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Rams, while Adair ended with 13 points.
The women will continue their conferenced play at home on Thursday against Bacone College at 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday against Langston University at 2 p.m.
