Dionelle Rucker gets fouled as he goes up for the lay-up.
Sun, Jan 31, 2010 - [Men's Basketball] - by Patricia Constantin
The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints men's basketball team did what no other team in the Red River Athletic Conference has been able to do this year - beat Texas Wesleyan University. The Saints did it at home at Mabee Gymnasium in front of a loud and boisterous crowd by a score of 85-66, improving their record to 12-8 and 8-2 in conference, while the Rams dropped to 16-5 and 9-1.

Dionelle Rucker gave the Saints the first possession of the game at the tip-off. Brian Sanders took the ball down the court, but missed the lay-up. A steal by Rucker gave Sanders another shot at the basket, and this time he successfully put it in to score the first points of the game that started more than an hour late.

A traveling violation gave the Saints the ball back and Ricardo Zanini hit a three-pointer to give the Saints the 5-0 lead. Hector Mukweyi from the Rams took the ball down the court for a slam dunk to get their first points of the game. The Saints were able to take a 13-4 lead, before the Rams could gain their composure. Saints freshman guard Robert Martinez was hit hard with an elbow to the face that kept him down on the court for about five minutes. He was helped off the court but returned just a few minutes later with 6:53 left in the first half. Rucker, who had five points and five rebounds, took the ball down the court to close out the half with a slam dunk and giving the Saints the lead, 36-34.

The second half began with Eddie Ortiz shooting back-to-back three pointers to kick off a 9-0 run increasing the Saints lead 54-45. Martinez and Zanini followed with their own three-pointers to increase their lead to 65-52.

With 4:33 left in the game, Curtis Bowens Jr. shot from the field taking the score to 75-60. The Saints made each of their final eight free throws to close out the game with an 85-66 win.

Rucker led the Saints in scoring with 21 points, as well as nine rebounds and five steals. Martinez finished with 18 points and was perfect from the free throw line hitting four of four. Sanders scored 12 points. Keonte Logan led the Saints in assists with four.

Leading for the Rams was Jamel White, who had 21 points. Mukweyi finished with 14, while Terrell Henry had 11 points.

The Saints shot 91% from the free throw line, missing just two shots in the first half.

The phenomenal win snapped the Rams' eight-game winning streak. The team had also won 25 straight regular season games against conference teams.

The Saints will continue conference play on Thursday at home against Bacone College at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday against Langston University at 4 p.m.
