SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 21, 2013) –Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Blue Stars Dance Team performed for the first time this season at the third annual men's basketball OLLU Halo Classic held at the Mabee Gym on Friday, Nov. 21.
The dance team made its debut during the 2010-2011 basketball season and has since been a part of the basketball teams' home games. This year, the team will also participate in a variety of Saints events and other athletic games.
In an effort to recruit more dancers for this year's team, Clark and Tapia held tryouts at the beginning of the semester.
"Recruiting went really well. We went out to the Club Rush and had about 50 girls show interest and 25 of them showed up to dance at the try-out,"explained Clark. "Out of the 25 dancers who tried out, we selected 11 who we thought would represent the University well."
Not only will there be an almost entirely new dance team performing at the basketball games this season, but the Blue Stars have also upgraded their looks with new jackets, uniforms and dance bags, as well as a brand-new name. Previously they were known as the Saints Dance Team.
The team practices three times a week inside the University Wellness and Activities Center's (UWAC) aerobic room or in the Champions Corner located on the second floor of UWAC.
"The women have a workout schedule to follow and we usually start with cardio, followed by stretching and we end the sessions with dance techniques," stated Clark.
During the team's first performance this year at the Halo Classic, captains Clark and Tapia have, along with the rest of the team, created a routine based on Beyonce's song "End of Time."
"People are going to see a whole new side of the dance team this year," said Clark. "We will be a little jazzy and maybe not use as much hip-hop as before. I think we are a more well-rounded dance team this year," said Clark
This weekend's performance is just the start of a busy season for the Blue Stars Dance Team that plans on having a dance recital on campus in the spring.
"We are planning to do some sort of fundraising throughout the year and when basketball is over we hope to have a recital in the Thiry Auditorium. This will be a good opportunity to recruit new girls for next year," said Clark.
