SAN ANTONIO (March 15, 2014) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team saved a sweep by Texas Wesleyan University after the Saints lost the first game 8-3 and a walk-off hit from Megan Perez (JR, Kerrville, Texas) in the seventh inning gave the Saints the 4-3 second-game win.
The Saints are now 13-5-1 on the season, while the Rams – a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference – move to 10-9.
After the Saints committed two errors in the second inning, the Rams scored three runs on four hits. The Saints came back in the fourth inning to score two runs. A double from Amanda Hinojosa (SR, San Antonio, Texas) got her on base, and Danielle Aguilar (SO, San Antonio, Texas) hit her first career home run to move the Saints to 2-3.
The Rams scored again in the fifth inning on a home run from Amber Tucker. OLLU freshman Larissa Gutierrez (FR, San Antonio, Texas) scored her first home run in the sixth inning to move the game to 3-4 in favor of the Rams.
In the seventh inning Kali Jester hit a three-run homer, and a double from Lauren Davis scored Morgan Johnson and the first game ended with the Rams winning 8-3.
Saints pitcher Maegan Ramirez (JR, Helotes, Texas) allowed 10 hits, while walking five and striking out six. Winning pitcher Amber Marlett allowed nine hits, while striking out three.
Katrisha Arocha (JR, San Antonio, Texas) started at pitcher in the second game, and she allowed two hits, while striking out six in five innings. In the top of the sixth, the Rams scored two runs, and Arocha was replaced with Krystal Zamora (FR, Carrizo Springs, Texas).
Raven Moreno hit a home run for the Rams in the top of the seventh, and the Rams took the 3-0 lead. Gutierrez started as batter for the Saints in the bottom of the seventh, and she singled to left. Brittany Martinez (FR, El Paso, Texas) came in to pinch run. Julie Ramos (SR, Los Fresnos, Texas) reached base on a walk, and a double from Brittany Stone (JR, Helotes, Texas) sent Martinez and Ramos home. Ashley Perez (SR, San Antonio, Texas) reached first on a hit to right field, which drove in Stone. A walk-off hit between left and center field from Megan Perez scored Ashley Perez, and the Saints won 4-3.
Stone led the Saints' offense with two RBIs, two hits and one run. Zamora got the win for the Saints after she allowed one hit and one run, while walking one and striking out one. Losing pitcher for the Rams is Morgan Johnson, who allowed eight hits.
The Saints will begin their conference schedule on Monday when they travel to Langston, Okla., to play Langston University. The Saints will play a double header on both Monday and Tuesday, March 17-18.
