The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints men's basketball team increased their winning streak to seven with the 87-84 win against Huston-Tillotson University on Thursday night in Mabee Gymnasium. The Saints keep their first-place conference status with their 12-2 record (15-8 overall), while HTU drops to 6-8 (6-15 overall).
Freshman standout Dionelle Rucker recovered his own tip-off to give the Saints the first score of the game. Another two pointer from the paint from Rucker gave the Saints a 4-0 lead. A hook shot in the basket from senior Justin Porter took the Saints to 10-4 and it looked as if the game was going to be another runaway one for the Saints. But seventh-place HTU kept up with the Saints, and with 14 minutes left in the first half, they took a three-point lead, 13-16, before a 3-pointer by Eddie Ortiz and a 2-pointer by Rucker switched the lead back to the Saints. Rams' Darral Glover made two points from the paint on a second-chance shot, and the score remained at 27-26 for more than two minutes before Robert Martinez scored two on an assist from Keonte Logan to take the score to 29-26. The Saints lost the lead and were down by as much as nine points. Rucker, already at 14 points in the game, did a reverse layup to take the score to 38-45. Six additional shots by Rucker, as well as two from Martinez gave the Saints the 45-42 lead to finish the first half.

The Rams came out during the second half with the determination to win the game. Within three minutes, they stole the Saints lead and after a goal-tending call was made on Porter, the score was now 52-59. The unstoppable Rucker, now on his sixth double-double of the season and his fourth in a row, gave the Saints back their lead 66-64 with less than 10 minutes left in the game. Curtis Bowens Jr. commited a foul with 7:31 left in the game to give the lead back to the Rams, 70-73. The two teams would tie the score four more times within the next five minutes of the game. Logan, on a fast break for a layup, got catapulted to the wall, and after making a free-throw, the score was now at 84-80. A foul on Bowens gave HTU's Cleveland Ziegler the chance to put another point on the board for them. After an offensive foul on Ricardo Zanini, the score was now at 84-83. Brian Sanders got fouled out and the Rams tied the score at 84. Zanini got fouled, made one of one from the line, and then Rucker made two from the paint to pull ahead and secure the win 87-84.

Rucker finished the game with a career high for both scoring and rebounding - 37 points and 19 rebounds - and his sixth double-double of the year. Martinez finished with 14 points. Glover scored 26 points for the Rams.

The Saints made 35 of 82 field goals (42.7%), 13 of 22 free throws (59.1%) and four of 18 3-pointers (22%).

The Saints will travel to Tyler, Texas, on Saturday to play Texas College. The last time the two teams met on Jan. 16, the Saints lost 89-85. Texas College is currently no. 3 in the conference with a 10-3 record (15-7 overall).
