Despite shooting .325 from the field and .133 from 3-point range, the Saints women's basketball team pulled off the win against last-place Paul Quinn College on Monday evening by the score of 69-58. The Saints improved their record to 12-14 overall and 8-8 in conference, while the Lady Tigers dropped to 1-18 and 0-14 in conference.
During the first seven minutes of the first half, the game stayed close, but after knotted at five, the Saints went on a 13-point run to take the score to 18-5. The Tigers came within nine points with a minute and a half until the end of the period, but the Saints prevailed and went to the locker room with a 10-point lead, 35-25.
On paper, the Lady Tigers had a better game than the Saints connecting on 22 of 54 field goals (.407), making one of two 3-pointers (.500) and 13 of 24 free throws (.542). The Tigers, playing with a total of five players (no one off the bench), committed 26 turnovers compared to 15 for the Saints. With two minutes left in the game, Lashia Walker from Paul Quinn fouled out, leaving the Tigers to play with just four on the court.
Jennifer Davison led the Saints in scoring with 13. Alisha Crump had 12 and Vernessa Roberts finished with 10. Ashley Hicks had nine boards and Krystal Manning finished with five assists. Mia Brooks led the Tigers in scoring with 22.
The women will play at home on Saturday against the University of the Southwest. The last time the two teams met, the Saints lost 68-80. USW is 6-9 in the conference and 9-16 overall.
