SAN ANTONIO (May 7, 2014) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) has hired Freddy Rodriguez as the head coach for the inaugural 2014-2015 men's baseball team. The Saints will begin competing in spring 2015 through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as part of the Red River Athletic Conference.

Rodriguez comes to OLLU from NAIA/Red River opponent Texas College, where he has been the head baseball coach since 2006 and the athletic director since 2013. He will start his position at OLLU on June 1.

OLLU Athletic Director Jack Hank said, "I have known Freddy for a long time, and I am thrilled that he will be joining the OLLU family. Freddy brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and experience, especially within the NAIA. We are excited to see him build our newest team to one that will succeed both in the classroom and on the field."

While at Texas College, Rodriguez's teams have qualified for the conference tournament every year since 2009. For three of those seasons, his team has earned the highest GPA among all other athletic programs at the university. He boasts an 84 percent graduation rate among seniors.

Rodriguez commented, "I am extremely honored and blessed to be joining the OLLU family as the new head baseball coach. I want to thank Jack Hank for giving me this opportunity to lead the baseball program and become a member of an elite coaching staff and athletic department. I look forward to building a tradition of excellence in the classroom and on the field."

Rodriguez earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies from Tyler Junior College, a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler and a Master of Arts in Athletic Administration from Concordia University – Irvine.

Prior to Texas College, Rodriguez was the baseball coach for Alexandria Aces, a summer baseball team with the Texas Collegiate League. He has been active in his community with the Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Club of East Texas, Habitat for Humanity and many other organizations. He is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The Saints held two tryouts during the spring at the Missions Baseball Academy, where they will hold their practices and games. The complex is located at 5707 State Highway 151 (Callaghan Rd. exit), in San Antonio – about three miles from the OLLU campus.

Those interested in trying out for the team should fill out the recruiting form located on the baseball home page of the Saints web site.
