The Saints women's basketball team faced the University of the Southwest Saturday afternoon in conference play and beat the team from New Mexico 75-70. The Saints improved their record to 13-14 overall and 9-8 in conference, while USW dropped to 9-17 and 6-10 in conference.
 
The women started out slow trailing by seven points within the first four minutes of the game. Freshman Vernessa Roberts chipped the Lions lead down to three after she made two. Guard Victoria Resendez took the score to 13-15 after she made a shot from the right. The Lions went up to 15-23 with 10 minutes left in the half, and within five more minutes the Saints trailed by 10. After a 2-pointer by freshman Stacey Darnley, the Saints took the lead at 39-38. Junior Krystal Manning ended the half with a 3-pointer, and the Saints went into the locker room with a 42-39 lead.
 
During the second half, the Saints maintained the lead until six minutes had passed when USW's Melody Borjas made a 3-pointer knotting the score at 51. The game would tie three more times before the Saints would take the lead back at 64-62. The score was stuck at 72-65 for more than two minutes before Kenisha McDade went to the line to shoot two. USW's Brittany Foster rebounded the ball after Saints forward Ashley Hicks missed her free throw and threw a 3-pointer in to end the game at 75-70.
 
Manning was the Saints' high scorer with 20, and both Alisha Crump and McDade added 14 points each. Darnley finished with 11 points, while Hicks was the lead rebounder with 10. Sirena Medrano contributed 20 points for the Lions.
 

 

The Saints shot 66.7% from the free-throw line, 38.9% field goals and 22.7% 3-pointers.

The Saints will travel to Marshall, Texas, on Monday to take on Wiley College. The last time the two teams met, the Saints won 77-72. Wiley is 6-10 in the conference and 8-18 overall
