The Saints from the first game they played against Southwestern Assemblies of God University were not the same Saints that played last night against the team from Waxahachie, Texas. The Lady Lions trampled the Saints on Jan. 28 63-36, but this time around, the Saints kept it more competitive, and they came out ahead beating SAGU 59-55. OLLU improves to 15-14 overall and 11-8 in the conference, while SAGU drops to 22-6 and 15-4 in the conference.
The Lions had first possession of the game and Nicole Linen scored from the paint. After a foul from Saints' Krystal Manning, Heather Jefferson made both free throws before the Saints would put their first points on the board. The Saints would be stuck at two, while the Lions continued dropping in baskets to take the score all way up to 14-2. Manning sunk a 3-pointer followed by a free throw from Jennifer Davison to take the score to 14-6, but the Lions kept pushing away to a 10-point lead, 20-10 with 10 ½ minutes left in the half. Another 3-pointer from Manning gave the Saints the momentum they needed as they trounced to a 13-point run giving them the lead at 28-22 with less than a minute left in the half. Saints' guard Vernessa Roberts threw one in and Manning followed with her third 3-pointer of the half to send the teams to the locker room with the Saints leading 30-26.

During the second half, both teams relentlessly fought for the ability to take over the lead, but the Saints were always a step ahead of the Lions. The Lions came within one point of the Saints with 12 minutes left in the second half, 38-37; Davison answered their challenge and kicked off a seven-point run to take the game to 45-37 - the Saints' largest lead of the game. The Lions came back with a vengeance and took over the lead at 51-50 with four minutes left. The teams would tie three more times before a technical was called on Lions' Jefferson for arguing a referee's call. Manning made both free throws, and Alisha Crump made both of her foul shots to end the game at 59-55.

Alisha Crump talks to Kelsey Johnson after the Saints' win on Thursday night.

The Saints made 17 of 58 field goals (.293), eight of 20 3-pointers (.400) and 17 of 23 free throws (.739). Manning and Darnley led the Saints in scoring with 14 points each. Crump led in rebounds with 11. Chelsea Jones for SAGU had 16 points in the game.

The Saints will play their last regular season game on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. The last time the two teams met, the Saints lost 76-78. Texas Wesleyan is tied with SAGU for second place in the conference with a record of 15-4 and 19-8 overall.

On March 4, the Saints will travel to Waxahachie to participate in the conference championship tournament. Seeds will be determined once the season is over this weekend.
