TYLER, TEXAS (Dec. 13, 2014) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball wins its fifth consecutive game in a crushing 100-59 victory over Texas College (TC).
The win moves the Saints to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while TC drops to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in conference.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said: "We forced 38 turnovers and played better defense in the second half. Any road win is a good win. We are starting to have more players contribute. We have a good game coming up on Monday (against University of the Incarnate Word)."
HISTORY: The Saints have won eight of 10 matchups against Texas. The losses came in 2010 by the score of 79-68 and in 2011 by the score of 101-93.
BASICS: The Saints had another runaway game, which allowed the bench to get in a lot of quality minutes while scoring 49 points. Although the team continues to struggle with the threes, they missed just six shots from the charity stripe.
LEAD CHANGES: The Lady Steers tied the game once, and came as close as five before the Saints' offense took off to lead by 11 at the 12-minute mark. TC brought the game back to within nine with less than nine minutes remaining in the half, but a 6-0 run by the Saints wiped that out quickly. The half ended with the Saints leading 50-38.
THE STORY ON OFFENSE: OLLU's Sonji Green (JR/Fresno, Calif.), Victoria Turner (SR/West Sacramento, Calif.), Taylor Hamilton (JR/Faifield, Calif.) and Jessika Montalvo (JR/Naples, Fla.) scored eight points each in the first half. In the second half, the Saints continued to pile on the points, with Whitney Sandmann (FR/Bentonville, Ark.) scoring 10 points and Rebecca Kolawole (SR/Dallas, Texas) adding eight to finish with 12 for the game. Turner was the Saints' highest scorer with 16 points, including 7-of-14 from the field, and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Green, Montalvo and Vasiliki Tarlas (JR/Halkida, Greece) each scored 10 points. Overall, the Saints shot 34-of-78 from the field, 6-of-22 from 3-point range and 26-of-32 from the charity stripe.
TC's La'Quita Hart was her team's highest scorer with 27 points, while teammate Fierra Hall added 11 points. Overall, the team shot 16-of-45 from the field, 3-of-10 from 3-point range and 24-of-38 from the free-throw line.
MUCH NEEDED HELP: OLLU's Kim Munoz (JR/Mesa, Ariz.) contributed two assists, and Turner added five steals. Overall the Saints had seven assists and 23 steals.
TC's Hart and Tatiana James each had two assists, while Shantel Jones added four steals. The team finished with five assists and nine steals.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: OLLU's Turner led the team in rebounds with seven, four on defense. The team finished with 12 offensive and 31 defensive rebounds.
TC's Shaqaal Guidry led her team in rebounds with seven, six on defense. Her team finished with a total of 42 rebounds, 34 on defense.
NEGATIVES: The Saints committed 18 turnovers, eight of which were in the first half. They also committed 27 fouls. The Lady Steers had 38 turnovers and 27 fouls.
UP NEXT: The Saints will return to San Antonio and will face NCAA DI University of the Incarnate Word on Monday, Dec. 15. The Saints played the Cardinals once in 2013 and lost 99-73. The team is currently 3-5.
