SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 23, 2015) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team played a hard-fought game against the University of St. Thomas Lady Celts, but the Saints prevailed to win 85-72. The Saints move to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while St. Thomas drops to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in conference.
The win comes during the University's annual #GoBigBlue-Out game that featured various contests aimed to honor Saints fans. A pizza party was given away to the men's baseball team for showing the most spirit. Prizes were also given away to the best dancer.
HISTORY: The Saints have won all six previous matchups against St. Thomas.
BASICS: Neither team shot well from the field or from 3-point range. The Saints made just 28 field goals out of 68 attempts, including 10 3-pointers made and 19 missed. The Saints' starters won this game, with the five averaging 14 points in 30 minutes played. The only Saint coming off the bench with more than 10 minutes playing time was Victoria Turner (SR/West Sacramento, Calif.), who logged 17 minutes and eight points. The bench contributed 15 of the 85 points scored. The starters definitely stepped up their game to push the team to its fifth consecutive win.
LEAD CHANGES: OLLU took the 4-0 lead after tipoff, but the Lady Celts came back to score four straight baskets to tie the game. A field goal by UST's Ana Dominguez gave her team the 6-4 advantage – the two-point lead would be the Lady Celts only point advantage of the game. OLLU's Courtney Bayliss (SR/Perth, Western Australia) sparked the offense with her 3-pointer that catapulted the team to a 27-12 lead. Bayliss produced her fourth 3-pointer at the 11-minute mark to give the Saints the 30-14 lead. The Saints continued their double-digit lead through the two-minute mark, when the Lady Celts got to within eight at 41-33. A pass from Taylor Hamilton (JR/Faifield, Calif.) to Sonji Green (JR/Fresno, Calif.) right at the half-time buzzer gave the Saints the 52-39 lead.
The Saints reached a 20-plus lead at the 17th minute after a pair of free throws from Green took the Saints to 59-39. The Saints continued to climb and a diving shot from Julia Rendon (FR/San Antonio, Texas) sank through the net and got the Saints fans to their feet as the lead increased to 68-49.
Another play that riled up the 600-plus Saints fans was a flagrant foul from UST's Madison Robinson knocked OLLU's Jessika Montalvo (JR/Naples, Fla.) to straight back to the floor. But the junior forward jumped right back up to sink one of two free throws to five the Saints the 82-65 lead.
The Saints led by as much as 24 points in the final period. St. Thomas went on a 7-0 run to end the game with the Saints' 85-72 win.
THE STORY ON OFFENSE: Bayliss finished with 25 points, including 8-of-17 from the field, 7-of-12 from 3-point range and two free throws. Montalvo and Taylor Hamilton each scored 12 points, while Kim Munoz (JR/Mesa, Ariz.) finished with 11 and Sonji Green added 10. Overall, the Saints shot 41 percent from the field for 28-of-68, 34 percent from 3-point range for 10-of-29 and 51 percent from the free-throw line for 19-of-37.
UST's Emily Sebo scored 16 points, while teammates Dominguez had 12 and Taylor Mitchel ended with 10. Overall the team shot 40 percent from the field for 26-of-64, 3-of-15 from 3-point range for 20 percent and 17-of-22 from the charity stripe for 77 percent.
MUCH NEEDED HELP: OLLU's Hamilton recorded four assists, one block and four steals. Both Munoz and Montalvo had five steals each. Overall the team finished with 14 assists, three blocks and 16 steals.
UST's Tannon Slater recorded four assists, while teammate Emily Sebo had two steals. Overall the team had 11 assists, one block and five steals.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: The Saints lost the battle of the boards after turning in just 36 rebounds compared to 54 for St. Thomas. UST's Dominguez led the game with 16 rebounds, 12 on offense.
NEGATIVES: The Saints took 22 free throws, while UST had 37. OLLU committed 18 personal fouls and St. Thomas had 25. The Saints committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 27.

UP NEXT: The Saints will return to Mabee Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 24 to host the University of the Southwest. In 10 previous matchups, the Saints have won nine. Their only loss came in the teams' first matchup in 2010, when the Saints lost 80-68.
Currently, Southwest is 3-17 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
