The OLLU Saints softball team ended its undefeated conference record last Sunday against Northwood University in Fort Worth with 11-8 and 6-1 losses. The Saints dropped to 12-2, while Northwood improved to 4-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference.
In the first of the doubleheader, Tiffany Stritz gave up two hits in the bottom of the first, but Northwood was not able to score. At the top of the second, Brook Hernandez reached first on a walk, and Stritz hit one out to centerfield. Kaitlyn Bourg reached first on an error by Jillian Jones, and a single to rightfield by Dawn Villegas scored both Hernandez and Stritz. Ashley Elizalde filled the bases one again with a single to the pitcher. Meagan Potts hit one to leftfield, bringing in Bourg to take the score to 3-0. Corina Noel got one out to centerfield, scoring Villegas. Maria Flores chipped one to the short stop, which brought in Elizalde, but forced Potts out. Hernandez was up again and a hit from her scored Noel. Bourg's hit brought in Flores and the inning ended with the Saints leading 7-0.
The lead was shortlived as the Knights' Eden Duquette began the inning with a hit to centerfield. Brittany Luna tripled to rightfield, scoring Duquette. Elba Labron bunted and reached first and on the next pitch, advanced to second on a stolen base. An error by Bianca Salinas brought in Luna, and the score was now 7-2. Courtney Hayley reached first base, and Angelique Meek's dropped fly by Noel got her on. A double by Taylor Jones scored two more runs, forcing the Saints to make a pitching change with Villegas replacing Stritz (6-2). Five more runs came in for the Knights as the inning ended with the score now at 7-9.
Elizalde got to first base in the third inning after being hit by the pitcher. A double by Flores scored Elizalde, and the inning ended with the score at 8-9. The Knights scored two more runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 8-11. Neither team was able to score additional runs through the end of the game. Taylor Jones picked up the victory for the Knights, while Villegas (4-2) was credited with the loss.
The Saints started the first inning of the second game with hits from Noel and Flores. Kailyn Miller ended the inning without giving up any hits or runs. Northwood scored the first run of the game during the second inning after a double from Devin Edgemon drove in Taylor Jones. The game remained at 1-0 through the fourth inning when Tancy Matthews and Brittany Luna scored to increase their lead to 3-0. Northwood scored three more runs in the fifth inning, taking the score to 6-0. At the top of the 6th inning, Noel blasted one over the fence to score the Saints' only run of the game. Larisa Garcia got the win, while Miller (3-3) finished with the loss.
The Saints' games against Texas Welseyan University on March 16 have been postponed to April 9. The Saints will face Oklahoma Baptist University in a nonconference doubleheader on March 17 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at home.
