Great Day SA and SASPORTS.COM showcased the Saints women's softball team during the March 25 show. Members of the team, as well as Head Coach Marie Stone and Assistant Coach Jessica Sanders, appeared on the weekly SASPORTS feature with Jay Tope, owner of the local web site that promotes high school and college sports in South Texas. Tope is also known as the "Voice of the Saints"--the public announcer for all softball, basketball, soccer and volleyball games at the university.
Great Day SA is San Antonio's No. 1 local entertainment/lifestyle program hosted by Bridget Smith. It airs daily at 9 a.m. on KENS-TV, the CBS affiliate.
Fill-in host Bill Taylor, the station's chief meteorologist, talked to the women about their success in their inaugural season this year. Tope recognized all the members of the team, including Maria Flores, Kailyn Miller, Alyssa Posadas, Melanie Gonzalez, Kaitlyn Bourg, Meagan Potts, Ashley Elizalde, Corina Noel, Tiffany Stritz, Ariel Mochacek, Dawn Villegas, Bianca Salinas, Brooke Hernandez, Samantha Guerrero, Andrea Porter and Hannah Godina.
Stone said the team, which leads the conference with a 14-2 record, has meshed well together both on the field and off. She called the recruiting process of gathering a team to be a part of the first-ever at Our Lady of the Lake University a challenge. The opportunity for the student-athletes to help build a program and to set the standard for all the future players who come in appealed to the members of the team.
Stone also talked about the remainder of the season, which is just about half-way over, and indicated that the team is looking forward to the conference tournament and hopefully qualifying for the national championship.
Tope highlighted the fact that many of the members of the Saints are local athletes from schools such as Brackenridge, Churchill, Burbank and San Marcos. He also gave a plug to Salinas' father, who owns a catering company and manages the concession stand at all the home games.
