ALEXANDRIA, LA. (Dec. 12, 2015) – Sonji Green (SR/Fresno, Calif.)'s sixth double-double and Alyssa Ward (JR/Palmeto, Fla.)'s 21 points guided the Our Lady of the Lake University women's basketball team to a 37-point win over LSU-Alexandria Saturday night. The Saints defeated the Generals 89-52 to move to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while the Generals drop to 1-3 in conference and 1-4 overall.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, "This was a great way to start conference play with a sweep of the Louisiana schools. I am very happy with our effort and defensive focus. We will continue to improve as the new players get used to our systems and each other. Our seniors Sonji Green and Taylor Hamilton (SR/Fairfield, Calif.) really provided great leadership this road trip. Now we are off to take on the No. 1 team in the nation – Vanguard."
The Saints have played the Generals twice – both last year – and won each time, 98-87 and 102-75.
Alyssa Ward put the Saints on the board first with a field goal and the Saints went on an 8-2 run. Ward's 3-pointer started a Saints' 10-0 run and an 18-5 lead with five minutes remaining in the first period. The Saints continued to dominate to end the quarter with a 25-14 lead.
Julia Rendon (SO/San Antonio, Texas) started the second quarter with a 3-pointer and the Saints provided no leeway for the Generals to compete. By the fourth minute, the Saints took a 20-point lead at 37-17. The half sent the teams into the locker room with the Saints leading 41-25. Hamilton took over as the leading scorer with 11 points.
Green's basket kicked off the third quarter, and the Saints kept dominating through the rest of the period. At the five-minute mark, LaQeisha Brown (JR/San Antonio, Texas)'s field goal gave the Saints a 30-point lead at 59-29. A shot from Whitney Sandmann (SO/Bentonville, Ark.) gave the Saints their biggest lead of 35 points with two minutes left in the period. Ward now led the Saints in scoring with 17 points and the period ended with the 68-34 lead.
LSUA started the scoring in the fourth period with a pair of free throws from Pearl Paulo. The Saints maintained their 30+ lead toward the end of the game. With 51 seconds remaining in the game, Daniela Nopuente (SR/Daly City, Calif.)'s 3-pointer moved the Saints to a 41-point lead. A pair of free throws and a field goal from LSUA's Taylor Holzmeier ended the game with the Saints winning 89-52.
Alyssa Ward scored a season-high 21 points for the Saints. She made 8-of-12 from the field including 1-of-1 from 3-point range and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Ward also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Saints. Green recorded her sixth double double after scoring 14 points and tallying 11 rebounds. She shot 6-of-10 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, as well as retrieving seven defensive rebounds and four on offense. Hamilton scored 13 points, while Nakia Page (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.) had 12, and Sandmann finished with 10. Julia Rendon recorded five assists and two steals.
LSUA's Pearl Paulo scored 15 points and teammate De'Shia Dillon finished with 14 points. Amber Sesair and Taylor Maricle added four assists each. Maricle also recorded eight rebounds.
Inside the boax
As a team, OLLU hit 41 percent of the shots from the field going 31-of-76 including 5-of-14 from 3-point range for 33 percent. The Saints sank 22-of-27 from the charity stripe for 82 percent.
LSUA went 19-of-62 from the field for 31 percent including 4-of-15 from 3-point range for 27 percent and 10-of-20 from the charity stripe for 50 percent.
The Saints won the battle of the boards with 49 rebounds, 31 on defense and 18 on offense. LSUA had 38 rebounds, 26 on defense and 12 on offense.
OLLU forced 29 turnovers and committed 23 fouls, while the Generals forced 22 turnovers and committed 22 fouls.
The Saints will travel to Costa Mesa, Calif., for the Vanguard Classic. On Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m., OLLU will play Biola University, and on Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m., the Saints play the No. 1 team in the NAIA, Vanguard University.
