When the Saints softball team faces Texas Wesleyan University on April 9 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., the women will play an important conference match-up and dedicate the games to an important cause. The doubleheader games will promote breast cancer awareness.
OLLU Head Softball Coach Marie Stone wanted to sponsor the program to provide lifesaving information about breast cancer and early detection. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, second only to skin cancer.
Informational brochures about the disease will be distributed at the game and special drawings will be held for prizes. Food, including fajitas, turkey legs, hamburgers, refreshments and other snacks, will be sold by Bobby G's Old School Barbeque. The catering company is owned by Bobby Salinas, father of Saints' third baseman Bianca Salinas. All revenues will be donated to the breast cancer awareness fund.
Texas Wesleyan University beat the Saints last week 3-2 and 6-0 in their first-ever match-up. The doubleheader in Fort Worth was the team's Think Pink Day, where $300 was raised and donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of the fight against breast cancer. The competition was also the first time TWU softball coach Shannon Gower played against one of her former players -- Coach Stone. While playing for Gower at TWU, Stone was a member of the first-team, all-region in 2006. She was also named Red River Conference Co-Player of the Year in 2006 and Red River First Team All Conference in 2005.
The Saints and Rams are tied for the lead in the Red River Athletic Conference. TWU is at 14-2 (22-11), while OLLU is at 17-5 (22-12).
