HOUSTON (Feb. 12, 2016) – Sonji Green (SR/Fresno, Calif.) broke a block record while Taylor Hamilton (SR/Fairfield, Calif.) led the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team to a 77-51 win over the University of St. Thomas (UST) this evening.
The NAIA's No. 1- ranked Saints have now won their 21st consecutive game to move to 21-2 overall and 12-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while UST drops to 9-13 overall and 5-7 in conference.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, "It was a very physical game. I thought we were consistent on defense. St. Thomas played a great game and made us work. We just need to work on our consitency on offense. This is a tough road trip this weekend, so we need to battle through and finish the road trip."
The Saints have faced the Celts nine previous times and have won all nine. Earlier this season, the Saints defeated UST 88-33.
After a made free throw from UST's Tori Frederick, the Saints jumped to a 5-1 lead. Alyssa Ward (JR/Palmeto, Fla.) increased the Saints' lead to 9-3 and baskets from Hamilton gave the Saints the 12-3 lead – their biggest lead of the first quarter. St. Thomas fought back to get to within two at 15-13 to close out the period.
Sonji Green started the second quarter with a field goal and the Saints took the 21-13 lead. At the seventh minute, Ward gave the Saints their first double-digit lead at 25-15. The Saints continued to climb to end the half with the 35-20 lead.
OLLU continued to dominate in the third quarter, but St. Thomas got to within 10 points at the seven-minute mark. Baskets from Ariel Clay (SR/Fairfield, Calif.) and Green pushed the Saints to the 47-31 lead. Hamilton finished out the third with the Saints leading 52-36.
Julia Rendon (SO/San Antonio, Texas) kicked off the last quarter with a 3-pointer to give the Saints the 55-36 lead, but St. Thomas took the game back to a 14-point deficit. At the four-minute mark, the Saints reached a 20-plus lead at 66-46. From that point, the Saints jumped to a 26-point lead to win 77-51.
OLLU's Taylor Hamilton led the Saints with 20 points including 5-of-14 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. She added seven assists and four steals. Alyssa Ward scored 13 points, including 6-of-10 from the field and one free throw. Whitney Sandmann (SO/Bentonville, Ark.) finished with 11 points, including 4-of-9 from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Julia Rendon scored 10 points. Sonji Green recorded 13 rebounds and had six blocks – a new OLLU record for the most blocks in a single game.
UST's Maghen Lormand scored 15 points, while Ana Dominguez finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Inside the box
The Saints hit 37 percent from the field going 26-of-70 and 6-of-21 from 3-point range for 29 percent. They sank 19-of-30 from the charity stripe for 63 percent.
St. Thomas went 17-of-69 from the field for 25 percent including 2-of-15 from 3-point range for 13 percent. They made 15-of-20 from the free-throw line for 75 percent.
The Saints lost the battle of the boards with 47 rebounds – 28 on defense and 19 on offense. The Celts had 54 rebounds, 30 on defense and 24 on offense.
OLLU forced 33 turnovers and committed 22 fouls, while the Celts forced 22 turnovers and committed 24 fouls.
The Saints will play on Feb. 13 against Texas College.
