The Saints softball team shared a doubleheader with the University of Houston at Victoria on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints took game one 4-3, and the Jaguars got the 2-0 shoutout in the second. The Saints improve to 26-14 for the season and remain 20-6 in the Red River Athletic Conference.
The doubleheader was billed as Parent's Day and immediately following the second game, the team and parents were treated to a reception in the University Wellness and Activities Center.
Brittany Parker for the Jaguars scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning. Batting second in the bottom of the fifth, Meagan Potts reached first on a single to center field. She moved to second and third on stolen bases, and Corina Noel hit a homerun to center to score two runs.
The Jaguars came right back in the sixth inning with a two-run homer by Allison Hinton to take the 3-2 lead. Tiffany Stritz shot one out over left field to tie the score at 3. The game remained tied through the bottom of the eighth inning. Kaitlyn Bourg reached first with a single to the shortstop. Dawn Villegas got the walk, and Brooke Hernandez's sacrifice grounder advanced Villegas to second and Bourg to third. Tiffany Stritz flied out to center, but Bourg was able to score the winning run.
Villegas (7-4-2) picked up the win giving up three runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in eight innings of work.
Corina Noel went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Stritz went 1 for 4 with two RBIs in the win.
UH-Victoria scored first in the second game with a run by Tasha Rotramel, and the game remained at 1-0 through the top of the seventh inning when Kori Kocian scored on a sacrifice grounder by Hinton to take the score to 2-0. The game ended with the Saints unable to score.
Rotramel pitched the shutout for the Jaguars giving up three hits, walking one and striking out six.
Kailyn Miller (6-4) got the loss after giving up 10 hits, two runs and striking out two.
The Saints will play their last home games of the season on April 27 when they face Huston-Tillotson University at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The last time the two teams met, the Saints won both games13-2 and 11-0.
