INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – (Bracket) Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) cruised to an 82-52 win over William Woods University in the fourth game of round one of the 2016 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship Wednesday afternoon.
"We felt like if we could turn them over, and make it a fast game we would be successful," said OLLU Head Coach Christopher Minner. "I thought overall that we stuck to our game-plan, and they made us play that way, but we were up for it."
In the second period, the Saints' basket by Alyssa Ward (JR/Palmeto, Fla.) increased their lead to 29-8 with 6:37 left in the half. The Owls responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit down to 12, but that was as close as William Woods would get, as OLLU led 37-22 at the half.
The Saints started the second half on an 8-2 run to increase their lead to 52-30 with 4:04 remaining in the period. OLLU continued to extend its lead late in the third, growing it to as many as 27 points (59-32) when Sonji Green (SR/Fresno, Calif.) found the bottom of the net with 1:28 left.
OLLU started the final period on a 15-8 run to push the lead to 32 with 2:40 left in the game – the largest lead of the game.
The Saints shot 38 percent from the field (30-of-79) and 41 percent (12-of-29) from distance. OLLU forced 31 turnovers and outscored the Owls 23-2 in fast-break points. Five Saints players scored in double-digits – Alyssa Ward (game-high 18 points), Nakia Page (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.) (16 points), Daniela Nopuente (SR/Daly City, Calif.) (12 points), Julia Rendon (SO/San Antonio, Texas) (11 points) and Taylor Hamilton (SR/Fairfield, Calif.) (10 points).
William Woods was led in scoring by Julia Wells, who tallied 10 points and 17 rebounds. The Owls shot just 32 percent from the field and 23 percent from behind the 3-point line.
OLLU reached the 30-win plateau for the second time in program history – both coming with head coach Christopher Minner at the helm. The last Saints loss came on Nov. 15, 2015, against now NAIA-No. 17 Oklahoma City, 87-85.
The Owls, making its ninth appearance in the NAIA Women's Basketball Championship, falls to 2-9 overall at the Championship.
OLLU will be back in action on Friday at 10:45 a.m. CDT against No. 5 Benedictine (Kan.) in second round action.
