SHREVEPORT, LA. (May 6, 2016) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball fought hard against Jarvis Christian College in the opening game of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament but came out with an 11-6 loss. The Saints will now play the loser of the second game between the University of Houston-Victoria and LSU-Shreveport on May 7 at 11 a.m.
Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, "It was a tough loss for us today. The one big inning was the difference in the ball game. We didn't give up and continued to chip away at the lead. We have to come out tomorrow with confidence knowing we can make it through the loser's bracket; we have no choice or options."
Jordan Hackett (SO/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound for the Saints, and he allowed one run to begin the game. A single from Nico Maldonado gave DeAndre McGuire the opportunity to score.
The Bulldogs had a six-run third inning to take the 7-0 lead over the Saints. Ryan Emerald hit a double, and Javion Randle walked. A hit from Carlos Andrade sent Emerald home, and Maldonado's hit scored Randle. Andrade was called out on the same play after he overran the base. A double from Koby Green sent both Maldonado and Salvador Alvarado Jr. home. Another double from Anthony Ortiz scored Carlos Martinez and Greene for the final runs of the inning.
Gabriel Raygoza (JR/San Antonio, Texas) came in to relieve Hackett at the end of the third inning. He gave up two runs to the Bulldogs in the fourth. Andrade's double sent Randle home, and a hit from Alvarado scored Andrade to give Jarvis the 9-0 lead.
The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with one run. Matthew Beasley (JR/Burleson, Texas) touched first on a hit to center field, and Leudy Betancourt (SR/Danbury, Conn.) doubled to left field. Enrique Ruiz III (SO/Helotes, Texas) got to first after being hit by Jarvis pitcher Emilio Griego. Josh Razo (SR/Pearland, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly, and Beasley came home to score. The game moved to 9-1.
Martinez reached first after a dropped fly by Ruiz in the fifth inning. Anthony Ortiz singled, and Martinez came home to score. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 10-1.
Darius Patton (JR/San Antonio, Texas) started a two-run rally in the fifth inning for the Saints. His single was followed by one from TJ Kassner (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas). Tyler Davis (SR/Weatherford, Texas) doubled to left to send both Patton and Kassner home. The game moved to 10-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, a hit from Emerald sent Koby Greene home. The Bulldogs now led 11-3.
Alex Torres (JR/Oxnard, Calif.) came in to relieve Saints pitcher Raygoza in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the inning, OLLU added two runs. Garrett Harrison (FR/Victoria, Texas) hit a double, and Betancourt reached first after being hit by Jarvis pitcher Luke McDonough. A wild pitch by McDonough sent Harrison home. Razo hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, and Betancourt came home. The game now stood at 11-5.
Harrison hit a sacrifice fly, and Kassner came home to score in the ninth inning. The game ended with the Saints losing 11-6.
Hackett suffered the loss for the Saints. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed nine hits and seven runs. Raygoza pitched 4.1 innings and allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out four. Torres pitched two innings and allowed two hits.
Earning the win for Jarvis was Griego, who pitched six innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six.
Jarvis was led by Ryan Emerald who went 3-4. Anthony Ortiz had three RBIs.
