Georgetown, Texas (Sept. 13, 2016) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints volleyball team struggled mightily in its matchup with NCAA Division III school Southwestern University, losing in three sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-14).
With the loss, the Saints drop to 7-4 heading into district play and 0-4 all-time versus the Southwestern University Pirates; having also dropped two previous games in 2014 and another one in 2012.
"That was a tough night for us. Southwestern is a very good team, they've got a great coach," Saints Head Coach Jeremiah Tiffin said. "Obviously winning on the road is tough, but I was disappointed with the effort we had tonight.
"This is three matches in a row that we've had the opportunity to get better on the road and we've not taken full advantage of it. So while the ability is still there, we've got to make sure we're playing up to that level."
Chronicling the loss
The Pirates raced out to a 9-2 lead to start the first set and never looked back, nearly doubling the Saints up in kills for the game at 39-20. In the first set, the Saints had 9 kills on 43 attacks and 8 errors; in the second, they had 4 kills and 5 errors on 18 attacks; in the third set, the Saints had 7 kills and 6 errors in 34 attacks.
Southwestern University controlled the net, recording 6 blocks (10 assisted, 1 solo) and denying the Saints' hitters any clean lanes to drive the ball through on attacks. OLLU compounded their problems with 19 attack errors, 6 service errors, and 5 block errors.
Kate Mitchell and Kirby Kincannon led the Pirates with 7 kills each, with Kincannon also contributing a team-high 3 aces. For the Saints, Leilani Smith (SR/Hilo, Hawaii) led the team with 6 kills and Ciana Tankelewicz (SO/Port Lavaca, Texas) had 11 digs.
OLLU opens up conference play with a home game on Friday, Sept. 16 against Texas College (with a 14-0 all-time series advantage).
