KOHLER, WISC. (Oct. 18, 2016) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's golf team improved from a first round fifth place to finish in fourth at the 2016 Kohler Collegiate Classic. The tournament took place at Whistling Straits – Straits Course in Kohler, Wisc., and was hosted by Lawrence Technological University (Southfield, Mich.).

Head Coach Alan E. Baxter said, "We had a tough day today. This is a hard golf course especially with the cold and the high winds. This is a big field with ranked teams. It is admirable that we came in fourth, but we are not satisfied. We will work hard. We have a huge tournament coming up in Doral. We will now focus on that course. Before that we look forward to playing in the Third Annual Saints Golf Classic and having some fun with our many benefactors and sponsors."

Texas Wesleyan University, whose team shot an opening round 6-over 294 for second place, improved to a final round 2-over 290 to win the tournament with an overall 584.

NCAA DII's Northwestern Ohio University, tied for third after the first round, took second place with a combined 18-over 594.

NCAA DI's Northern Michigan University dropped from first place to finish in third with an overall 19-over 594.

OLLU shot an opening round 8-over 296, four shots behind first place Northern Michigan. The Saints finished the final round with a 17-over 305 for an overall 25-over 601.

Finishing in fourth was NCAA DII's Ferris State (605), followed by NAIA's Taylor University (606), St. Xavier University (616), Holy Cross University (618) and Indiana Tech University (624).

Mott Community College (626) came in ninth place, followed by NAIA's Lawrence Tech (628), William Carey University (630), Bellevue University (631), Viterbo University (631) and Grace College (631).

NCAA DII's University of Wisconsin Parkside (640) came in 15th place, followed by NAIA's Roosevelt University (649). After Grand Rapids Community College (656), was NAIA's Aquinas College (665) and Concordia University (736).

Christopher Schriedel (SR/Helotes, Texas) (73/75) and Kane Ybarra (FR/San Antonio, Texas) (71/77) led the way for OLLU with a 4-over 148 for an overall finish of a tie for sixth place out of 99 golfers.

Tied for 11th place was Rafael Jauregui (JR/Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico) with 5-over 149 (75/74). Stevan Hinojosa (JR/Mission, Texas) shot a 13-over 157 and Gerardo Daniel (FR/San Antonio, Texas) shot a 17-over 161 (77/84).

What's next

Republic Services presents the Third Annual OLLU Athletic Fund Golf Tournament and Dinner on Oct. 26. The Saints will play alongside benefactors and sponsors of OLLU athletics at the Republic Golf Course in San Antonio. After that, the team will travel to Miami to participate in the Dave Adamonis Sr. Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
