KERRVILLE, TEXAS (Nov. 1, 2016) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints volleyball team (21-6) defeated Schreiner University (3-24) in three sets (25-18, 25-11, 25-17) in its last nonconference game of the regular season.
The Saints' defense continued its suffocating ways, holding Schreiner University to an anemic .060 hitting percentage. It was a well-balanced effort, with three different Saints recording at least 15 digs. With the win, the Saints are 9-2 in the all-time series against Schreiner.
"We got contributions from a lot of people tonight. I thought our setters did a really good job of mixing up who they were setting to, getting the middle blockers involved first and then getting our outside hitters involved," Head Coach Jeremiah Tiffin said. "We got a lot of digs tonight to Raven Swain (JR/Pflugerville, Texas), Brittany Martinez (SR/El Paso, Texas) and Audrey Contreras (SR/McAllen, Texas). So I'm really proud of the team. We have a couple of tough matches on the road, but I like where we are headed into the conference finals."
Chronicling the win
The Saints finished with a .241 hitting percentage, outpacing Schreiner University with 39 kills to 26 on the strength of a superior passing attack, getting 38 assists to Schreiner's 24. In the first set, the Saints finished with 13 kills on 24 attacks with five errors, while Schreiner University also had 13 kills and five errors, but needed 35 attacks to get them.
In the second set, the Saints' defense clamped down, holding Schreiner University to just four kills on 46 attempts with four errors. Offensively, the second set was the Saints' most efficient, recording 15 kills on 47 attacks with only three errors for a .255 hitting percentage.
The Saints had 11 kills on 27 attacks with five errors in the third and final set, while Schreiner University had nine kills on 36 attacks with 10 errors.
Kendall Groff (SR/Helotes, Texas) led the Saints with nine kills. Leilani Smith (SR/Hilo, Hawaii) had eight kills on 15 attacks with no errors for a match-high 0.533 hitting percentage. Janelle Solis (SR/San Antonio, Texas) led the team with 18 assists, while Alexia Bustamante (SR/Helotes, Texas) contributed 17 assists of her own.
The Saints finish their regular season on the road with conference games against Jarvis Christian College on Nov. 4, and Texas College on Nov. 5. They will defend their Red River Athletic Conference Championship (RRAC) at home, with OLLU hosting the RRAC Championship Tournament on Nov. 11-12.
