SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 10, 2016) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team reached the century mark for the first time this year as the Saints defeated the Texas College (TXC) Steers 102-66.
With the win, the Saints are now 5-5 for the season and 2-0 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Steers fall to 0-7 and 0-2 in conference.
Alyssa Ward (SR/Palmeto, Fla.) led the Saints with 24 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, to go with nine steals and five assists. The Steers were led by Linet Juma, who had 24 points and 17 rebounds.
The Saints forced 32 turnovers for a season high, while committing just 10.
Five Saints scored in double figures, led by Ward, as well as Julia Rendon (JR/San Antonio, Texas) with 15 points, Lena Wilson (FR/Converse, Texas) with 13 points, Kasey Saldana (FR/San Antonio, Texas) with 11 points and Francesca Patrick (JR/Killeen, Texas) with 10 points off the bench. Whitney Sandmann (JR/Bentonville, Ark.) led the team in rebounds with eight. The Saints' bench outscored their counterparts 46-12.
The Steers had three players in double digits. Linet Juma led the team with 24 points, Monica Dorsey had 16 points and Kaylee Gaddis finished with 12 points.
On Dec. 16, the Saints will play Wiley College in Marshall, Texas at 5:30 p.m. The Saints lead the all-time series 11-5. On Dec. 17, the Saints will continue their road trip to play Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. The Saints lead that all-time series 11-2.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
