TYLER, TEXAS (Jan. 28, 2017) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints men's basketball team defeated the Texas College Steers 80-59 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game.
The No. 19-ranked Saints improve to 12-6 on the season, sitting fourth in the RRAC standings with a 7-4 conference record. Texas College fell to 4-16 and are currently last in the RRAC with a 2-9 conference record.
Joe Jackson (SR/San Antonio, Texas) was the only player on either team to score in double figures, posting 24 points on a blistering 9-for-13 shooting, including 3-for-4 from the 3-point line. Jackson, the NAIA's fifth-leading shot blocker (2.18 per game), also contributed six rebounds, five blocks and a steal.
"We played well in the second half, our defensive intensity was good and Dav'vin Hill (SR/Victoria, Texas) did a great job starting our run with his on-ball defense," Head Coach Ryan Wall said. "We are getting better defensively, now we just have to put it all together for an entire game."
The Saints held Texas College to just 24-for-57 shooting (42.1 percent), limiting the Steers to three made 3-pointers on 22 attempts (13.6 percent). OLLU's defense, which ranks fourth in the NAIA in steals per game (10.35), forced 25 turnovers, including nine steals, for a 21-15 edge in points off turnovers.
Allen Wilcher (SR/Gary, Ind.) complemented Jackson in the frontcourt with seven points, seven rebounds and two steals. The starting backcourt of PJ Escobar (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and Darion Brown (JR/Alexandria, La.) each had six points, three assists and two steals. Hill provided energy off the bench, tallying nine points and five rebounds in addition to his stifling defense.
Every player scored for Texas College, but none finished in double figures. Jaren Murphy led the team in scoring off the bench, finishing with nine points on 3-for-6 shooting. Myron Breshear had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Saints kickoff a four-game homestand next week, beginning with a game against No. 11-ranked Wiley College on Feb. 3, followed by a game versus Jarvis Christian College on Feb. 4.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
