SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 24, 2017) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints women's basketball team clinched its fifth consecutive Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) regular season championship with a 77-69 win over the LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) Pilots.
The No. 16-ranked Saints improve to 22-7 on the season and 16-1 in conference play, pushing the Pilots down to 19-9 and 14-3 in conference with one conference game left in the regular season.
Alyssa Ward (SR/Palmeto, Fla.) scored 20 points and dished out four assists, Jessika Montalvo (SR/Naples, Fla.) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Whitney Sandmann (JR/Bentonville, Ark.) contributed 15 points and eight rebounds. After, all three climbed the ladder to cut down the net to celebrate their regular season championship.
OLLU struggled to contain LSUS inside in the first half, getting outrebounded 27-13 before the break. The Pilots' Kourtney Pennywell worked the Saints' defense inside, establishing position on the weak side against the 2-3 zone as LSUS swung the ball from one side to the other before finding her on quick duck-ins for layups. Quiana Tucker contributed nine rebounds in the half for LSUS to help the Pilots to a 38-35 lead.
Montalvo began the second half with two offensive rebounds on the Saints' first two possessions, leading to a Sandmann bucket and Ward 3-pointer.
Both Montalvo and Sandmann were crucial in the second half, crashing the glass, blocking shots (three each) and deflecting interior passes (Sandmann had two steals, while Montalovo had one) to stifle the Pilots. After combining for three rebounds in the first half, the Saints' starting frontcourt had 15 in the second to give OLLU a 25-23 rebounding edge over the final 20 minutes.
The Saints locked down defensively in the fourth quarter, finishing the final 10 minutes on a 21-13 run while getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Julia Rendon (JR/San Antonio, Texas), followed by consecutive buckets from Sandmann and Montalvo for an 11-point lead to pull away for good.
Francesca Patrick (JR/Killeen, Texas) scored 12 points off the bench as the only other Saint in double figures. Pennywell finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for LSUS, with Courtney Randle scoring 12, Bria Freeland scoring 11 and Quiana Tucker finishing with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Saints will wrap up their regular season on Saturday afternoon with a game against LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) at home. OLLU is 5-0 all-time against LSUA.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
