SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 25, 2017) – On seniors' night, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints women's basketball team honored its soon-to-be graduates, then got a glimpse of their future in a 110-67 victory over the LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) Generals.
Having clinched their fifth consecutive conference title the night before, the No. 16-ranked Saints played their normal starters sparingly, getting all six players who scored in double figures off the bench. OLLU finished the regular season 23-7 and 17-1 in conference. LSUA finished 11-11 overall and 8-10 in conference.
Starting alongside fellow seniors Alyssa Ward (SR/Palmeto, Fla.) and Jessika Montalvo (SR/Naples, Fla.), Chelsea Foster (SR/De Soto, Texas) scored the Saints' first basket of the game on a put-back. The three carried a relatively light workload, combining for 16 points without any of them playing more than Foster's 18 minutes. Instead, freshmen Kasey Saldana (FR/San Antonio, Texas) and Annie Lenoir (FR/Brady, Texas) led the team with 15 points each as the OLLU bench outscored the LSUA reserves 82-28.
Lenoir hit five 3-pointers on nine attempts, with several coming via passes from Saldana, who dissected the Generals' defense with seven assists while also contributing five rebound and two steals.
Quintianna LeShore (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) had 14 points on nine shots, pulling up from midrange and snaking her way to the rim. Francesca Patrick (JR/Killeen, Texas) continued her strong play with 12 points, a team-high nine rebounds and three assists. Lena Wilson (FR/Converse, Texas) had 11 points and five rebounds, and Rachel Baity (JR/San Jose, Calif.) finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Temekia Bonner had 12 points and Luv Blackburn scored 11 points as the only LSUA players in double figures.
The Saints' defense forced 19 turnovers, including 10 steals, for a 30-12 advantage in points off turnovers. They also outrebounded LSUA 57-46, outscoring the Generals 19-11 in second chance points. OLLU shot 48.7 percent for the game, including 10-for-23 (43.5 percent) from the 3-point line.
Next week, the Saints will travel to Alexandria, La. to compete in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament, which runs from March 2-4. The Saints won the tournament last year.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
