MOBILE, ALA. (May 16, 2017) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's team made a valiant effort but succumbed to William Woods University in the first round of the 66th Annual NAIA Men's Tennis National Championships. The Saints lost 8-1 to end their season with a record of 8-6. William Woods, the No. 9 ranked team in the NAIA will move on to the second round.
The teams opened the match with doubles beginning at 8:30 a.m. today. On the first line, Mathias Rocha (JR/Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil) and Bernardo Pegas (SR/Bage, RS, Brazil) lost 9-8 (7-3) to David Barbieri and Stefan Simic. In line two, Ross Marzetti (JR/Robigana, Tasmania, Australia) and Warren Fulgenzi (FR/Las Vegas, N.M.) lost 8-4 to Oscar Barreiro and Johnnie Carmichael. In the third line, Jacob Galaviz (SR/El Paso, Texas) and Pablo Cavazos (SO/Pharr, Texas) lost 8-1 to Christian Barbieri and Christopher Vleeming.
Rocha dropped his singles match 6-2, 6-4 to Barbieri, while Marzetti fell to Barreiro 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. On the third line, Pegas lost 6-0, 6-0 to to Vleeming. Fulgenzi was the only Saint to win his match. He defeated Carmichael 2-6, 7-6 and 10-6. Cavazos lost to Oscar Donker 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, and Galaviz dropped his match 6-2, 6-0 to Barbieri.
