KANSAS CITY, MO. (July 18, 2017) – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 1,677 teams that have earned the distinction for Scholar-Teams for the 2016-2017 academic year. Five teams from Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) have been included in the list this year.
Men's golf and tennis, and women's soccer, softball and volleyball all earned NAIA Scholar-Team recognition this year. Women's soccer led the way with an overall 3.34 GPA, followed by golf with a GPA of 3.11. Softball earned a 3.08, while both men's tennis and volleyball tallied a 3.01 GPA.
Last season, women's soccer, softball, golf and volleyball earned Scholar-Team recognition. In 2014-2015, OLLU's Scholar-Teams included women's soccer, cross-country, softball and track and field, as well as men's golf.
Of the 26 student-athletes on the women's soccer team, 20 earned 3.0 GPAs and above, including seniors Daniela Colina, Gabriela Colina, Pauline Fields, Gabriela Lopez, Yesenia Martinez, Katherine Murtagh-Huerta with 4.0; Brooke Cousins (JR/Bulverde, Texas), Madison Garvin, Jackie Lambarida (SR/San Antonio, Texas), and seniors Madison Raines and Amaris Tavares with GPAs between 3.5-3.9; and Elise Acosta (SO/San Antonio, Texas), Victoria Castro (SO/McAllen, Texas), Ruby Coronado (SO/Universal City, Texas), Maryssa Garza (SO/Portland, Texas), Amber Hadfield (SO/Westminster, Calif.), Brandi Lugo (SO/Georgetown, Texas), Maggie Miller (SR/Manhattan, Kan.), Sophia Perez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and senior Hayley Tiernay with GPAs between 3.0-3.49.
Nine members of the softball squad earned 3.0 GPAs and above. Earning 4.0s were seniors Jana Arena and Lauren Garza, as well as Ashton Gautreaux; earning GPAs between 3.3-3.9 were Taylor Doege (SR/San Antonio, Texas), Lauren Guerra (SR/El Paso, Texas), senior Larissa Gutierrez, Alexis Macias (SR/San Antonio, Texas), Ina Trejo (JR/Mission, Texas) and senior Brooke Vasquez.
Eight of the 12 members of the golf team earned GPAs of 3.0 and above. Kane Ybarra (SO/San Antonio, Texas) tallied a 4.0, while Alan Crosswell-Karam (SO/Mexico City, Mexico), Jonah Guajardo (SO/San Antonio, Texas), and seniors Omar Ramirez and Christopher Schriedel earned between 3.5-3.9; and David Ray, and seniors Merrick Ramos and Jeremy Gordon earned GPAs between 3.0-3.4.
Of the 13 volleyball team members, nine earned GPAs of at least 3.0. Ciana Tankelewicz, seniors Jessica Walaski and Kendall Groff recorded 4.0s, while Mariza Cardenas (JR/Brownsville, Texas) and senior Leilani Smith tallied GPAs between 3.5-3.9; and seniors Alexia Bustamante and Audrey Contreras, Anyssa Rivera (SO/El Paso, Texas) and Raven Swain (SR/Pflugerville, Texas) earned GPAs between 3.0-3.49.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
