SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 13, 2017) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Men's Basketball Head Coach Ryan Wall has announced the addition of Michael Poindexter to his coaching staff. Poindexter became Wall's assistant coach in late August, taking over for Robert Ford, who left OLLU this past summer for an assistant coaching job at NCAA D2 Salem International University.
Wall said, "I would like to welcome Coach Poindexter to OLLU. He has a tremendous work ethic, and he loves what he does. He will be great with developing our student athletes on and off the court. He also has been all over and will help in recruiting future Saints."
Poindexter is a native of Memphis, Tenn., and he comes to OLLU after serving as an assistant coach and head coach at his alma mater Cordova High School in Memphis.
In 2017, Poindexter served as the head coach at On Point Hoops Academy in El Reno, Okla. From 2013-2015, he was the assistant coach at Ancilla Community College, where he was the recruiting coordinator and where he managed academics for the team. He helped Ancilla win more games in two years in the history of the program. Poindexter also served as the assistant coach at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., during the 2012-2013 season.
Before his time at Pima, Poindexter was on the coaching staff at Indiana Tech University for two seasons, working with Coach Rodney Hamilton. In those two seasons, the team won more games than the previous five years in the program. He served as the team's recruiting coordinator and was over academics for the team.
Preceding his time in college athletics, Poindexter enjoyed great success as a head coach in the Memphis Blazers AAU program. In his six years with the Blazers, the team was able to finish in the top five in the country twice. He helped more than 100 youngsters go on to play college basketball on a variety of levels, some as high as NCAA Division I.
Poindexter received his Bachelor of Business from Indiana Tech University in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Poindexter joins one of OLLU's most successful athletic teams, being the first team to advance to the Elite 8 Round of the NAIA National Tournament. The team has an overall 170-80 record and is 86-35 under Wall. The team has advanced to the post season each year since its inaugural season in 2009. In its first year, the Saints were co-champions of the Red River Athletic Conference. In 2011-2012, the Saints captured the regular season, and in 2014-2015, they were co-champions of the conference. The team has made three trips to the national tournament, two of which they finished in the Sweet 16 Round.
The Saints are regularly ranked in the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, and were ranked as high as fifth in the nation.
The Saints will begin their 10th season on Oct. 31 with a game against Northern New Mexico College in Espanola, N.M. They will play their first home game on Nov. 25 against Wayland Baptist University.
