SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 30, 2010) -- Freshman Alisa Bernal's regular season debut as a Saint could not have gone much better. Bernal, the former William Howard Taft High School standout notched two goals and two assists in her first official game for the Our Lady of the Lake University women's soccer team Monday against the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers at OLLU's soccer field.
Just to make sure everyone knew she was on the field, she also made a guest appearance in the referee's book after she was cautioned with a yellow card for physical play. Bernal's physical play was echoed by her teammates throughout the midfield as the Saints took control of the middle of the field from the opening whistle.
After nearly 30 minutes, the Lady Saints opened up the scoring when Bernal took a centering pass from junior midfielder Evelyn Robledo, and headed the ball off the crossbar. Fellow freshman midfielder Victoria Vazquez smothered the rebound and tucked it past the Rangers goalkeeper to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes before the halftime whistle, Bernal corrected her aim when she made a run down the left side of the field and fired off a 25-yard rocket past the Rangers net minder to push the Saints lead to 2-0.
The second half was a mirror image of the first with the Saints controlling the tempo of play, and Bernal running rough shot through the Rangers defense. After 25 minutes, Bernal notched her second unassisted goal of the game after collecting the ball 30 yards from the net, and shaking her defender before unleashing another missile from long distance to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage.
With eight minutes left in the match, junior forward Amanda Bonds took a Bernal assist and found the back of the net to finish the scoring for the Saints. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Aschley Harrison recorded her first regular season shutout of the year.
The Saints' next match is scheduled for Friday at OLLU's soccer field against Texas Lutheran University.
