AUSTIN, TEXAS (Jan. 10, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team staged an epic comeback to defeat Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) in a Red River Athletic Conference matchup. The Saints' 79-74 win improves their record to 7-0 in conference and 13-5 overall, while the Rams drop to 5-2 in conference and 5-7 overall.
Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, "We had a bad start; they were 50 percent from the three in the first half. Everytime we come here, this is how it is. They play really well against us. We have to learn that it is a tough place to play. I thought we started making layups and then we started getting some rebounds. I told the girls that if we could get to within four at the end of the third, then we'd be alright. We executed what we needed to and we got some stops, but it's always a war here. It came down to defense in the second half. We scored a lot of points, but we should have gotten to No. 12 (Charmin Woods); we are playing against some really good guards, so this might have been a really good test for us. It wasn't a great game but not every game is going to be good. We took their best shot at home where they are pretty good and it's a big-time win for us. Now we just have to focus on Shreveport."
The Saints are 20-1 against HTU. Their only loss came in 2014.
OLLU's Quintianna LeShore (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) scored the first points for the Saints and was quickly followed by a 3-pointer from Korie Pichon. The Rams maintained the lead through the rest of the quarter. The Rams took a game-high nine-point lead with less than four minutes remaining. Two back-to-back threes from LeShore got the Saints to within one, and the first quarter ended with HTU leading 18-17.
The Saints scored to begin the second quarter, giving the Saints the 19-18 lead. HTU's Charmin Woods shot a three to regain the advantage. The Rams went on a 11-0 run to go up by 13 after sinking three straight threes. The Saints chipped away at the Rams' lead to end the half trailing 33-40.
HTU continued to dominate in the third, taking a game high 14 point lead at the five-minute mark. The Saints got as close as five to end the third quarter trailing 54-61.
The Saints came out on the court on fire, with the push led by Destinee King (JR/Antelope, Calif.), who got the Saints to within three. LeShore sank a basket to move the Saints to 62-64, but the Rams shot back to lead by six at 72-66 with less than six minutes remaining in the game. King tied the score at 72 at the four-minute mark and a free throw from Nakia Page (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) gave the Saints their first lead of the second half at 75-74 with less than two minutes left in the game. The score remained at a 77-74 lead for the Saints. The Rams inbounded the game, but failed to connect on a three. A foul on OLLU's Alexis Oaks (SO/College Station, Texas) sent her to the charity stripe, and she gave the Saints the 79-74 lead with three seconds left in the game and secured the win.
LeShore led the Saints in scoring with 21 points. She went 7-for-13 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Lena Wilson (SO/Converse, Texas) added 13, while King scored 11 and Francesca Patrick (SR/Killeen, Texas), 10.
