SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 3, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team lost three of four seven-inning games to Avila University this weekend. The Saints lost the first game on Friday 1-2 and won the second game 4-0. On Saturday, the Saints lost both games, 3-4 and 3-5. OLLU drops to 2-5 on the season, while Avila improves to 3-1.
The Saints got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff batter Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) started the game with a double and Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) hit a sacrifice fly out to send Mihalov home.
The Eagles tied the game in the third inning. A hit to the pitcher from Henry Morphew sent Grant Burns home.
In the sixth inning, the Eagles scored another run. Dylan Lucas' run gave the team the 2-1 lead and ultimately the win.
The Saints recorded seven hits, including those by Mihalov, Cameron Guzman (SO/San Antonio, Texas), Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas), Jacob Mitchell (FR/Harker Heights, Texas), Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Alec Martinez (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas). The Eagles tallied eight hits.
Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound, and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, while striking out three. Gunnar Friend earned the win for the Eagles.
In the second game, a triple from Brown scored Mitchell, and the Saints took a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Saints added three more runs. A hit from Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) scored Mihalov, and a double from Nick Ludwig (JR/Tomball, Texas) gave Guzman and Andrew Ogletree (FR/Mission, Texas) the opportunity to score. The game ended with the Saints winning 4-0.
Ty Cook (FR/Highlands, Texas) earned the complete-game win for the Saints. He allowed five hits while striking out seven.
Enrique Ruiz III (SR/Helotes, Texas) doubled in the third inning. A hit from Martinez sent Ruiz home and the Saints took a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Eagles added two runs. Burns hit a double and Jordan Clarkin came home. A hit from Chris Begg scored Burns and the Eagles took a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly-out from Josh Shewmaker sent Lukas home and the Eagles increased their lead to 3-1.
With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Brown was hit by the pitcher, and Diaz came in to score. The game moved to 3-2 with the Eagles leading.
In the top of the seventh, a hit from Daniel Wells scored Burns, and the Eagles now led 4-2.
The Saints threatened in the bottom of the inning, but were only able to score one run. A double from Ludwig sent Guzman home. The game ended with the Eagles winning 4-3.
JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) suffered the loss for the Saints after pitching five innings. He allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out three.
Tyler Burrow earned the win for the Eagles.
Ludwig led the Saints on offense, going 2-for-3 and adding an RBI.
The Saints took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ruiz got on base on a single, and a hit from Jorge Collazo Jr. (FR/San Antonio, Texas) sent Ruiz home. Mihalov's hit to right field scored Collazo.
In the third inning, the Eagles added three runs. Shewmaker tripled and Brandon Chandler came home. Burns followed with a double to send Shewmaker home. Another hit from Begg scored Burns.
The Eagles added another run in the fifth inning after Chandler homered to left. The Eagles took a 4-2 lead.
A hit from Martinez in the fifth inning sent Mitchell home to score. The Eagles still led 4-3.
Morphew reached base in the seventh inning, and he was sent home after a sacrifice fly out from Chandler.
The Saints were not able to score to close out the seventh inning, and the Eagles won 5-3.
Garrett Moltzan (SO/Justin, Texas) suffered the loss for the Saints. He pitched five innings, allowing six hits and four runs, while striking out two. Justin Loman earned the win for the Eagles.
Mihalov and Brown went 2-for-4, with Mihalov adding one RBI. Mitchell went 2-for-3, adding one run, and Ruiz went 2-for-3 adding one run.
The Saints will play another four-game series on Feb. 9-10. They will host Sterling University beginning at 1 p.m. both days.
