HAWKINS, TEXAS (Feb. 3, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team snuck by Jarvis Christian College (JCC) with a 67-60 win to improve to 17-7 overall and 11-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). JCC drops to 4-17 overall and 1-11 in conference.
The Saints are 16-3 against the Bulldogs. Earlier this season, the Saints defeated JCC 91-81.
Head Coach Ryan Wall said, "We played good defense in the second half. We bounced back and got a win. We have to prepare now for two more road games this week."
The Basics
The Saints took the first lead of the game, but the Bulldogs kept the score close, tying four times within the first five minutes. A basket from OLLU's Alex Doche and a three from PJ Escobar got the Saints to a 17-12 lead. Brandell Collins' shot moved the Saints to lead 23-17 at the 11-minute mark. A field goal from Courtney Julien gave the Saints their first double-digit lead at 27-17, but the Bulldogs fought through to tie the score at 27 and 32. With less than five minutes left in the half, the Bulldogs took over the lead and got to 38-32 with three minutes remaining on the clock. The half ended with JCC leading 41-36.
The Bulldogs started the second period with a three from Sam Auguste, and JCC kept the lead through the 14-minute mark. Escobar sank a 3-pointer to give the Saints the 50-47 lead. The Bulldogs got to within three, but the Saints kept their composure to pull off the 67-60 win.
Offensive Standouts
Julien and Escobar led the Saints with 17 points each. Simon Shaffack Jr. added 10.
JCC's Auguste led his team with 22 points and Dion Malone added 14.
Defensive Leaders
Doche, Julien, Brandon Joseph and Shaffack tallied four rebounds each for the Saints. Leonard Herring led JCC with five rebounds.
Much-Needed Help
Julien led the Saints in assists with three, and both Collins and Joseph tallied two steals. JCC's Phillip Thompson led his team with three assists.
Inside the Box Score
OLLU combined for 21-of-50 shooting for 42.0 percent, 7-of-18 from beyond the arc for 38.9 percent, and 18-of-28 from the charity stripe for 64.3 percent. JCC was 17-of-54 for 31.5 percent, 11-of-30 in 3-point attempts for 36.7 percent, and 15-of-16 free throws for 93.8 percent.
OLLU collected 34 total rebounds, while JCC tallied 36. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed 11.
