SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 23, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team narrowly missed a win over LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) to capture the Red River Athletic Conference regular season title. Behind by 10 points at the seven-minute mark, the Saints fought back to take over the lead at 60-59, but the Pilots prevailed to win 65-62. The Saints are now 21-8 overall and 15-2 in conference, while the Pilots move to 28-1 and 16-1 in conference.
The Saints are 13-10 against the Pilots. In their first match up this season, the Saints lost 90-93.
Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, "Very competitive game. Unfortunately, our offensive execution was terrible, and they really took us out of our rhythm. We had a good shot at the end but it went in and out. Hopefully, we can bounce back and win the tournament."
LSUS's Christina Devers was fouled at the beginning of the game, and she made both shots to give her team the 2-0 lead. After a shot from Quintianna LeShore (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.), the Saints went on a 7-0 run to lead 9-4. The Pilots got back the lead, and Francesca Patrick (SR/Killeen, Texas) put the Saints back on top after making a pair of free throws. OLLU closed out the quarter leading 22-11.
The Saints continued to dominate in the second quarter, taking a 26-16 lead at the six-minute mark. The Pilots went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 26, and after a three from OLLU's Nakia Page (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.), Devers made one of her own to give her team the 30-29 lead. The teams ended the half tied at 33.
In the third period, after five minutes expired on the clock, the Pilots took the lead at 41-39. The Saints would end the period scoring just six points in 10 minutes as the Pilots led 51-39.
LSUS kept their double-digit lead going up by a game-high 15 points at the nine-minute mark. With the game at 56-46, the Saints went on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 59 with less than two minutes left on the clock. A free throw from LeShore gave the Saints the lead, but a field goal from Alexis Collins put the Pilots back on top 61-60. The teams tied again at 61, and Devers regained the lead for the Pilots at 63-62. The Saints had several opportunities to tie or lead in the last seconds, but the Pilots prevailed to win 65-62.
LeShore led the Saints with 18 points. She went 6-of-15 from the field, 1-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-8 from the free throw line. Patrick added 14 points, and Destinee King (JR/Antelope, Calif.) recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and tallying 14 rebounds.
