SAN ANTONIO (March 2, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team opened up Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play against LSU-Alexandria (LSUA). The Saints defeated LSU-Alexandria in two games of the three-game series. In the first game of the series on Thursday, the Saints won 7-6. On Friday, the Saints split the doubleheader. The Saints won the first game 5-2 and lost the second game 4-7.
OLLU is now 8-13 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while LSUA moves to 3-13 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "Getting the first two games to begin conference was big for us. Alexandria has won the conference the past two years so it was a great way to start off. We got great efforts on the mound with Jordan, Ty and and Logan in game one and the complete game by JB was huge in game two. I thought game three we were a mentally tired, and it showed. It's a good start to conference play, but we have to continue to grind out games and bring our best efforts every game out."
Game One
Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound for the Saints. The game had a slow start and the Saints scored their first run of the game in the second inning. Andrew Ogletree (FR/Mission, Texas) came into the game to pinch run for catcher Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas). Ogletree scored on a passed ball to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Brady Fryou scored off a sacrifice bunt from Ty Desormeaux to even up the score 1-1. Kane Bass came in to pinch run for Thane Lanclos. Bass scored on a double that was hit by Zach Hebert.
A single to center in the third inning by Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) brought in Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) for the Saints, which brought the score to 3-3. The top of the fourth inning put runs up on the board for the Saints with Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) hitting a double that resulted in an error. The at-bat yielded two runs from the Saints with Ryan Chapa (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) and Brown both scoring to bring the score to 5-3.
The Saints added another run in the eighth inning with a double from Brown resulting in Ryan Ramsey (JR/Grapevine, Texas) scoring bringing the score to 6-3. The bottom of the eighth inning added a run for the Generals. A single from Zach Hebert brought in Desormeaux bringing the score to 6-4.
In the ninth inning the Saints added one run to the board. Mick Hernandez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) came in to pinch run for Anciso. Hernandez scored off of a single by Diaz. The Generals rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell short. Auston Wilson scored off of a single from Fryou, which resulted in a score of 7-5. The last run of the game came off of a single by Desormeaux to score Hebert. The game ended with the Saints defeating the Generals 7-6.
Brown went 3-5 adding one run and Anciso went 2-4 also adding one run. Hackett was credited with the win after pitching six innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six.
Game Two
JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) started the game for the Saints and threw the entire seven innings. The Saints got on the board in the first inning with a single from Diaz that scored Alec Martinez (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) and Anciso bringing the score to 2-0.
The second inning put the Generals on the board with a single from Fryou scoring Logan Consatantine bringing the score to 2-1. Hebert hit a sacrifice bunt to score Wilson and even up the score 2-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Anciso hit a single that brought in Chapa and Brown giving the Saints the 4-2 lead. The Generals opted for a fielder's choice, which resulted in a run being scored by Martinez. The games ended with the Saints winning 5-2.
JB Martinez was credited with the win. He pitched seven innings while allowing two runs, five hits and striking out four.
Diaz recorded a stellar performance going 2-3 and recording 3 RBI. Martinez went 1-3 with two runs scored and Anciso went 1-2 with one run in the win.
Game Three
The last game of the conference match up started with Alec Martinez on the mound for the Saints. The Saints struck early with an error from the Generals generating a run for the Saints. Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) scored and brought the score to 1-0. In the bottom of the first inning, a single from Constantine brought in Sebert and Desormeaux giving the Generals the lead 2-1.
A fielder's choice from the Saints resulted in Drew Brown scoring for the Generals to bring the score to 3-1. The fourth inning also saw the Generals dominating the game offensively with a double from Seth Patin scoring Wilson to bring the score to 4-1.
In the seventh inning, Ogletree scored off of a ground out by Chapa. The Saints now trailed 4-2. The Generals added cushion to their lead with a double from Desormeaux scoring Hebert and Patin. The Generals now led 6-2.
The Saints tried to rally past the Generals in the eighth inning. Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to score Nick Ludwig (JR/Tomball, Texas) and Ramsey hit a double that scored Jorge Collazo Jr. (FR/San Antonio, Texas) The Generals still held the lead 6-4. The Generals solidified their win by adding a run in the eighth inning. Bass came in to pinch run and scored off of a wild pitch by Tony Esparza (SO/Spring, Texas). The game ended with the Saints losing 4-7.
Ludwig went 2-4 with one run, Ogletree went 2-4 with one run and Ransey was 2-3 at the plate with one RBI. Martinez recorded the loss for the Saints. He pitched four innings allowing three runs and recording five strike outs.
What's next
The Saints will host Trinity University for a nonconference match up on Tuesday, March 6. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and will take place at Missions Baseball Academy.
