SAN ANTONIO (March 30, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team played a scrappy Jarvis Christian College team that fought hard all three games, but the Saints were able to win the first and last game 4-1 and 8-7, and lost the second game 3-4.
The Saints improve to 17-7 overall and 14-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while Jarvis moves to 3-12 overall and 1-6 in conference.
The Saints are 10-1 against the Bulldogs.
Game One
Kristina Tiffany (JR/San Antonio, Texas) hit a double in the third inning to score the first run of the game, sending Amanda Guerra (JR/Stafford, Texas) home.
Madeline Wolken (FR/Houston, Texas) reached base on a walk in the fourth and Kimberly Chaves (SR/McAllen, Texas) hit into the infield. Guerra's hit sent Wolken home. Jalin Oliva-St. Romain (FR/Highlands, Texas) got a hit and Chaves scored to give the Saints the 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs added their only run of the game. Cheyanne Carter (SR/Hempstead, Texas) came in to relieve starting pitcher Ciera Martinez (FR/San Antonio, Texas). Vivikah Pesina scored on a hit from Olinda Molinar.
Three errors by the Bulldogs in the sixth inning gave the Saints the opportunity to score one more run. Ina Trejo (JR/Mission, Texas) scored after Guerra bunted and reached first on an error by pitcher Crystal Fagnana.
Martinez earned the 4-1 win after pitching five innings. She allowed three hits while striking out 12. Carter pitched two innings and secured the save.
Guerra went 2-3, adding one run and two RBIs.
Game Two
The Bulldogs added the first runs of the game in the first inning. Melena Gutierrez singled, and Jacklynn Flores got to base on a hit. Graciella Becerra hit a double, sending Gutierrez and Flores home. After that, starting pitcher Cela Hernandez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) was replaced by Taylor Doege (SR/San Antonio, Texas) for the Saints.
In the bottom of the third, Kristina Tiffany singled to left, and after a hit from Alexis Macias (SR/San Antonio, Texas), Doege hit a sac fly to send Tiffany home. The Bulldogs now led 2-1.
In the seventh inning, Becerra homered to give the Bulldogs the 3-1 lead.
Closing out the seventh, the Saints scored two runs to tie sending the game into extra innings. Wolken hit a double, followed by another double from Tiffany that sent pinch-runner Lauren Guerra (SR/El Paso, Texas) and Oliva-St. Romain home.
In the ninth inning, Emeralda Hernandez singled and Ylianna Ortiz came home to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 lead. The Saints were not able to score to close out the ninth, so Jarvis earned their first conference win.
Martinez suffered the loss for the Saints. She relieved Doege and pitched 6.2 innings allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out 11.
Tiffany went 2-5, adding one run and two RBIs.
Game Three
Tiffany singled in the second inning, and Trejo came home. Oliva-St. Romain advanced to third on the hit and then she stole home to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.
Doege started the third inning with a double, and she later scored on a fielder's choice hit from Chaves. The Saints now led 3-0.
Molinar singled in the fourth for the Bulldogs and pinch runner Melena Gutierrez scored off a hit from Fagnana. The Saints lead was now at 3-1.
The Saints added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off three Jarvis errors. Brianna Ortiz (FR/Robstown, Texas) scored on a wild pitch by Jarvis pitcher Fagnana. Pinch runner Destiny Vega (SO/Corpus Christi, Texas) scored on a passed ball by the catcher. Alexis Macias scored the third run off a hit from Wolken. The Saints now led 6-1.
Jarvis tied the game in the seventh inning after scoring five runs on two outs. Flores and Cynthia Velazquez reached on a walk, and Becerra got to base on a Saints error. A hit from Molinar sent Flores and Velazquez home. A double from Gariella Omichi-Quintero sent Becerra and Molinar home.
In the eighth inning, the Bulldogs added a run. Fagnana got to base on a hit and she later scored after a sac fly from Becerra.
With the game at 7-6 in favor of the Bulldogs, the Saints closed out the inning with two runs to win the game. Trejo first got on base on a hit, and Oliva-St. Romain safely bunted. Ortiz got a single, and Trejo came home to tie the game at seven. Macias doubled to left to send Ortiz home to win the game.
Martinez earned the win after pitching 3.1 innings allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out three.
Trejo went 2-3, adding two runs. Ortiz went 1-4, adding two runs and one RBI.
