SAN ANTONIO (April 20, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team secured two of three wins against Texas College (TC) behind stellar pitching performances from Jordan Hackett and JB Martinez. The Saints won the first game 7-5 and the second game 4-0. They dropped the third game 4-6 to move to 21-26 overall and 13-10 in the Red River Athletic Conference. TC is now 25-24 overall and 10-14 in conference.
Hackett had a great outing for the Saints. He held the Steers to zero runs up until the third inning.
In the third inning, TC's Marques Irving reached base on a walk. He stole second base and ended up crossing home plate on a single from Cameron Phelts. The Steers lead the Saints 1-0.
The bottom of the third inning saw the Saints answer back. Russell Brown reached base for the Saints off of a single. He then went on to steal second base and was moved to scoring position by Robert Lopez with a bunt. A single from Daniel Anciso sent Brown home and brought the score to 1-1.
Offensive momentum began to show in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jose Diaz singled to the outfield. A double from Alec Martinez proved to be just enough power to score Diaz and bring the score to 2-1. Ryan Ramsey kept the momentum up by singling to the infield and scoring Martinez. The Saints lead the Steers 3-1.
The Steers were left scoreless throughout the previous innings by the dominating pitching performance from Hackett. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Saints solidified their victory. Brown singled up the middle. Lopez recorded a double that scored Brown. Light came up to bat and singled. The hit scored pinch runner Mick Hernandez and Light advanced to second. Diaz singled to the pitcher and Light scored. Martinez came up to bat and singled, which moved Diaz to second. A walk from Enrique Ruiz III scored Diaz. The Saints took hold of the game and lead 7-1.
In the eighth inning, the Steers' offense came to life. Phelts singled to start off the inning. Brayden Rawlinson singled and moved Phelts to scoring position. A double from Josiris Del Orbe Martinez scored Phelts and Rawlinson. A single from Hunter Babineaux scores Del Orbe Martinez. The Saints still hold the lead 7-4.
The ninth inning had Mark Zuniga hitting a double for the Steers. He scored off of a single from Phelts, but their offencive efforts were not enough. The Saints won 7-5. Hackett recorded the win and tallied five strikeouts in eight innings of work for the Saints.
The Saints began the second game ahead by scoring two runs in the first inning. Jacob Mitchell and Diaz scored off of a hit from Martinez. The lead was in favor of the Saints 2-0.
In the third inning, the Saints earned another run to support their hard fought defensive efforts. Diaz singled to right and scored off of a double from Light. The Saints now lead 3-0.
The Steers were offensively silent throughout the game. OLLU scored one more run to solidify their victory in the bottom of the sixth inning. Light earned a free pass as a base runner from a walk. Hernandez came in to pinch run for Light. He stole one base and crossed home after a passed ball. The Saints defeated the Steers 4-0 in the second game.
JB Martinez was credited with the win for the Saints. He pitched a total of six inning and gave up four hits and three walks. He struck out the Steers six times.
The game was a pitchers' match up until the fourth inning. The Steers scored two runs off of a triple from Emerson Shelvin. Both Babineaux and Smith scored to bring the score to 2-0 in favor of the Steers. Additionally, the Saints put one run on the board with a solo homerun shot from Light. The Saints now trail the Steers 1-2.
In the sixth inning, the Saints evened up the score with a leadoff single from Brown. He was then brought home by a single from Diaz. The Saints are now tied 2-2.
The eighth inning was a tough one. The Steers capitalized on a few miscues from the Saints and were able to put one run on the board. Phelts scored on a single from Rawlinson. This brought the score to 2-3 in favor of the Steers. The Saints tried to add to offensive efforts and they were successful. The Saints Xavier Solis and Diaz both reached home on a single from Martinez. The score was brought to 4-3 in favor of the Saints.
The last two innings of the game were won by the Steers. In the ninth inning, the Steers took advantage of their pinch runners and Marques Irving scored on a fielder's choice. OLLU forced the game into extra innings, but the Steers prevailed. In the 10th inning, Logan Nicholson scored off of a single from Babineaux. A sacrifice squeeze bunt put up the last run for the Steers with Babineaux scoring for the Steers. The Saints fell to the Steers 4-6.
The Saints are set to take on Trinity University in a nonconference game. OLLU baseball will travel to Trinity University for one nine inning game on Monday, April 23 at 7 p.m.
