SAN ANTONIO (April 23, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team dropped a nine-inning nonconference game against NCAA D3 powerhouse Trinity University Monday evening. The Saints lost 7-2 and move to 21-27 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 32-4.
The Saints have played the Tigers seven times since 2015 and Trinity leads the series 5-2.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "Trinity is a good ball club and they took advantage of some mistakes we made and were able to put some runs up it the middle and later innings. We struggled to get anything going offensively until late in the game. Mid week game that gave us a chance to rest a couple of guys and get some others in the mix, we need to crank it up a few notches heading into this weekend and the conference tournament."
Ty Cook (FR/Highlands, Texas) guided the Saints to two scoreless innings, and both Adrian Gonzalez Jr. (FR/Weslaco, Texas) and Colton Vien (SO/Montgomery, Texas) pitched one scoreless inning. Joey Baker (SO/Cuero, Texas) came in during the fifth inning, and Trinity's Jake Martin reached on a dropped fly ball, and Michael Goodrich scored on the sac fly.
In the sixth inning, with Jesus Ramirez (JR/Quitman, Texas) on the mound, Goodrich scored again on a RBI single from Logan Morrison. Joey Pecoraro scored on a fielding error by the Saints. The Tigers took the 3-0 lead.
Triston Scherer (FR/Crosby, Texas) started on the mound in the seventh, and he allowed a home run from Jake Martin, which also brought Rafe Chaumette home. Jack Wisniewski also scored on a double from Pecoraro. Trinity took the 6-0 lead.
Tony Esparza (SO/Spring, Texas) finished out the game in the eighth inning. Parker Cormack scored on a hit from Blake Frampton. They took the 7-0 lead.
Nick Ludwig (JR/Tomball, Texas) prevented a shutout in the ninth inning after he doubled. He was called out trying to stretch to third, but Mike Light (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Erik Trevino (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) scored. The game ended with the Tigers winning 7-2.
Baker suffered the loss, allowing one hit and one run. Ludwig led on offense going 1-4, adding two RBIs.
