MESQUITE, TEXAS (May 6, 2018) – After a whirl of time, date and venue changes due to inclement weather in the Dallas area, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team was finally able to play its Red River Athletic Conference Championship Tournament game on Saturday. Originally scheduled to play on Friday at 6:30 p.m., the Saints faced the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) (after the Jaguars beat the University of the Southwest) at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament was adjusted to single elimination with all games played on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. The championship game took place Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Unfortunately, the Saints were not able to come out ahead against the Jaguars, arguably, the conference's most successful team despite being the third seed. Prior to the tournament, UHV had won the last 12 of 13 games, with the one loss being against the Saints on April 27. Saturday, the Jaguars proved too tough for the Saints, as they powered through a 12-4 win to advance to the tournament championship game. They faced the newest member of the conference – Texas A&M University – Texarkana – and they defeated the Eagles 10-9 to advance to the nationals later this month.
Conference pitcher and newcomer of the year Ciera Martinez (FR/San Antonio, Texas) started in the circle for the Saints. The Jaguars were able to power through to begin the game after scoring five runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.
Martinez started the third inning allowing a double from Angelica Davidson and a single from Ashley Reyna before being relieved by Cheyanne Carter (SR/Hempstead, Texas). Both scored after a hit from Alyssa Adames, and the Jaguars increased their lead to 7-0.
In the fourth inning, Michelle Revels homered to give UHV the 8-0 lead.
The Saints followed in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. Amanda Guerra (JR/Stafford, Texas) walked and she later scored on a hit from Lexus Lozano (SO/San Antonio, Texas). Taylor Doege (SR/San Antonio, Texas) hit a three-RBI triple, driving in Ina Trejo (JR/Mission, Texas), Jalin Oliva-St. Romain (FR/Highlands, Texas) and Kristina Tiffany (JR/San Antonio, Texas). The Jaguars now led 8-4.
In the fifth inning, the Jaguars scored two runs off Carter. Cela Hernandez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) came in to pitch for the Saints to close out the inning. She allowed one run in the sixth after a Saints error gave Davidson the opportunity to score. The Jaguars now led 11-4.
UHV scored their final run in the seventh inning after Lisa Sosa hit a double. She later scored on a ground-out RBI by Revels.
Martinez suffered the loss for the Saints after pitching two innings allowing five hits and seven runs.
Doege led the Saints on offense. Off her triple, she had three RBIs.
The Saints end their 2018 season with an overall record of 24-11.
